On a typically humid August Day, Blue Jays gathered in the courtyard for their first assembly of the 2021 school year. Principal Peter Kernion ’90 spoke about the importance of the upcoming year, even if certain activities look different. President Fr. John Brown, S.J., followed by saying that students should look up for inspiration and guidance from their teachers and the ultimate truth that is God. 

In addition to starting an exciting new year, Blue Jays young and old had the opportunity to gather in the newly renovated Jesuit Cafeteria. The shiny building will also house a new company that will be responsible for feeding Jesuit students: Pigeon Catering. From the wall wraps illustrating iconic Jesuit moments to the delicious smells that spread throughout, there will be something for everyone to love. 

Four Class of 2017 Blue Jays found their way back to Carrollton & Banks and gave back to the institution that helped form them by handing out free senior shirts on Registration day. Bennett Faust, Jack Pontin, Cullen Unsworth, and Christian Marks assisted students during the first registration day that did not include the physical purchasing of books on campus as that step has moved completely online. Welcome back to campus Blue Jays!

Included in the renovation for the Jesuit Cafeteria, Coca-Cola branded refrigerators can be seen inside the shiney interior. With school starting this week, the new and improved cafeteria will be ready to host any hungry Jesuit student with a novel aesthetic and a variety of food choices. 

Assistant to the president for mission Jeremy Reuther ’01 and academic assistant principal Kathy Juhas lead the new teachers in an exercise about the life of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Jesuit is excited to welcome all the new members of the faculty as the start of school is right around the corner. 

On Saturday, July 31, Jesuits and laymen alike gathered at the Holy Name of Jesus Church on St. Charles to celebrate the feast of the founder of the society of Jesus. Many Jesuits from Jesuit High School populated the Altar including new regent Jeff Miraflor, S.J. (seen carrying the cross), Fr. Anthony McGinn, S.J., Fr. Kevin Dyer, S.J., Fr. Stephen Kramer, S.J., and Jesuit president Fr. John Brown, S.J.

A new Blue Jay mother and her son browse the selection in the temporary Blue Jay shop in room 132. Under the new guidance of Wanda Montalbano, the fresh and improved shop will be moving into the new Administrative building once construction is completed. 

In preparation for band camp next week, members of the Jesuit High School band met on Carrollton & Banks to shake off some summer rust, get sized for uniforms, and meet up with friends and mentors. The Jays usually travel to Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, but this year the camp will mostly take place at Pan American Stadium. 

The Division I State Championship Jesuit baseball team visited the floor of the LA House of Representatives in Baton Rouge on Wednesday, July 21. The Jays are fresh off an American Legion State Championship, but they found the time to visit the Capitol in their Sunday best and spoke with Gov. John Bel Edwards, Rep. John Illg’ 84 and Rep. Matthew Willard ’06. 

This morning, Fr. John Brown, S.J., assisted by Fr. Kevin Dyer, S.J., blessed the new 1,600 pound cross that will soon adorn the new Jesuit administration building. The structure is turning into a sight to behold on Carrollton & Banks as construction is approaching completion in the coming months. 

To get ready for the upcoming school year, incoming eighth grade students attend study skills camp to prepare for the new challenges of high school. To help them along this journey is Jesuit English and study skills teacher Mr. Webre, who brings fun and wisdom to the classroom. 

Fr. Julio Minsal Ruiz, S.J., meets Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Square. Fr. Minsal is starting a new assignment in Rome and decided that his first task should be meeting the leader of the universal Catholic Church. Fr. Minsal taught at Jesuit New Orleans as a scholastic from 2013 – 2016.

The Jesuit Wrestling team poses in front of Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. The Blue Jays took part in a camp and competed well by finishing in 5th place. Teams from Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Virginia were represented.

Blue Jays old and new flock to the corner of Carrollton and Banks for the Used Uniform Sale. In room 132 the Jays look to score Jesuit school uniform shirts, pants, sweatshirts, P.E. shorts and shirts, belts, and other apparel for a great deal. The sale will last until 6:00 p.m. today and will pick back up tomorrow, Tuesday, June 15, from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Alumni Director Michael Prados ’83 explains to the upcoming reunion classes the steps needed to plan their next reunions. On June 9, 2021, classes that ended in “2” and “7” met at Central City BBQ to pick dates and start planning for the 2022 reunion season. Classes as far back as 1957 and as early as 2017 were in attendance to enjoy delicious BBQ and jovial conversation.
