Joseph Paul Dupré, president of Jesuit’s 2014-15 student council — and believed to be the first junior in the history of the organization to hold its highest office — was formally sworn in, along with members of the executive board, at Morning Assembly on Friday, August 22.

Dupré stood atop a riser facing the entire student body and faculty as Jesuit principal Mr. Peter Kernion ’90 administered the oath of office. Amid cheers and applause, Dupré then jumped off the riser and scampered up the podium steps to administer the oath to the eight members of the executive board: senior Chris Mills (vice-president), senior Michael McMahon (secretary), senior Mako Giordano (treasurer), Harrison Bond (senior class president), David Keller (junior class president), seniors Will Arnold and Dillon Knight, and junior Felix Rabito (executive aides).

The student council’s many activities throughout the year features three goals that hopefully will be achieved with a great measure of success, according to Mr. Chris Bowes, co-moderator of the student council.

• The student council is enacting a new plan for homeroom representation. At the end of last year, each grade voted on homeroom representatives. Those students elected were placed in separate homerooms and they experienced leadership training over the summer. They will lead the elections to vote for the second representative for each homeroom. In the past, both representatives were elected once the new school year had started. The new system provides an element of additional training and seniority.

• The executive board is moving away from the point-driven Homeroom Showdown in favor of more organic grade-level events.

• The executive board wants to radically change the Winter Dance (January 31) from a semi-formal event to a more casual and energetic affair called #TheBlueJayRave.

A brother succeeding a brother as president of Jesuit’s student council is yet another historic distinction. Dupré is succeeding his older brother Christopher, who graduated last May with the Class of 2014. While a senior, the elder Dupré served as the student council’s president during the 2013-14 school year. Another brother, Matthew Dupré, who graduated in 2012, also served as president of the student council. A third brother, Arthur Dupré, served as vice-president of the 2004 student council, the year he graduated.

Joseph Dupré is the fifth Blue Jay son of Shirley and Arthur Dupré ’76.
