Wrestling Tops Rummel in Dual Meet, 43-30
With the state championship meet less than a month away, the Blue Jay wrestling team is in good form, posting a solid win against cross-town rival Archbishop Rummel, 43-30, on Wednesday, Jan. 28. Seven Blue Jays took home wins, including two pins.
Junior Evan Palmisano (160) was first to the mat and wrestled to a convincing win by fall in the second period.
Junior Guy Patron, Jr. (195) dominated his challenger at every turn before winning by fall in the third period.
After a close first two periods, senior Dom Carmello (285) pinned his opponent in the third period.
Defending state champion and senior Ben D’Antonio (120) won a physical and hard-fought match. D’Antonio and senior Brody Martin were each recently ranked No. 1 in their weight class in LouisianaWrestling.net’s All-State Rankings.
Senior Peyton Markey (126) followed with another win, defeating his opponent by fall in the first period.
Senior Max Grosch (138) fell behind in the first period, only to come back for a decisive 11-2 win.
Sophomore Brandon Greer (152) helped the Blue Jays put the match away with a decisive win, pinning his opponent in the first period.
The Blue Jays return to action this weekend when the varsity squat splits to compete in two meets. On Friday, Jan. 30 the Blue Jays will travel to Lafayette to compete in the 39th Annual Ken Cole Invitational. The Blue Jays hope to repeat past success at the invitational, having won it more than a dozen times in its 38 year history. The rest of the team will make the short trek to Kenner on Saturday, Jan. 31 to compete at the Bruin Invitational at Bonnabel High School.
