Blue Jay Lacrosse Opens Season with Win Over Lafayette

Two goals by junior Connor Martinez, including this one, helped the Blue Jays beat the Lafayette Hurricanes, 16-2, on Saturday, Jan. 17, at Will Clark Field.
Junior Max Murret scored six goals to pace a relentless Jesuit attack as the Blue Jay lacrosse team downed the Hurricanes of Lafayette, 16-2. The season opener for both teams took place on Saturday, Jan. 17, at Will Clark Field.
From his midfield position, sophomore Briggs Lucia tallied 3 goals, while juniors Josh Cvitanovich and Connor Martinez, both attackers, had 2 goals apiece. Senior Cameron Guernsey led all Blue Jays in assists with 5.
Senior Billy McMahon was outstanding on face-offs. Senior Eric Wright and junior Rob Hinyub alternated quarters in goal.
The Blue Jays jumped out to a 10-2 halftime lead, which allowed new head coach Steve Krobert ’05 and his staff to empty the bench. Krobert replaced long-time head coach Mike Brantley after the 2014 season. Jesuit lacrosse won state championships in 2012, 2013, and 2014.
“I was very pleased with the play of our attackers and defenders, but we’ve still got some work to do with our midfielders,” Krobert said. The Blue Jays are without the services of several middies recovering from injuries, who played major roles in 2014.
The Jays will compete in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Lacrosse Classic at Lafreniere Park on Jan. 24 and 25, before traveling to Dallas for a tournament hosted by Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas the following weekend.
