WGNO Classic: Jays Knock Off Cougars, 2-0, with Strong Pitching, Timely Hits

Blake Baker slides safely home in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the Jays up, 2-0, over the St. Thomas More Cougars.
The 2014 Blue Jays’ varsity baseball team looked impressive in a 2-0 win over St. Thomas More in the inaugural WGNO Classic. The game was played Thursday evening, Feb. 27 at John Ryan Stadium because the original setting, Segnette Field on the West Bank, was still trying to dry out from heavy rain in the area.
Senior Brandon Sequeira almost went the distance, pitching a three-hitter, striking out eight batters, and shutting out the Cougars. With two outs and a pair of Cougars on first and second in the top of the seventh inning, head baseball coach Joey Latino summoned senior Glynn Hyer to the mound to finish off St. Thomas More. Hyer did not disappoint and got the job done, whiffing the batter for the third out to end the game.
The Jays had four hits, including two from senior second baseman Blake Baker, and one each from junior right-fielder Ben Hess and senior third baseman Spencer Miller.
The Jays are scheduled to play the Franklinton Demons at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28. First pitch is 4 p.m. at Chalmette High School’s Bobby Nuss Field. Jesuit is scheduled to play a double-header on Saturday, March 1 at Wesley Barrow RBI Field, beginning at 9:30 a.m. against West Ouachita. The second game will start approximately at noon against the Ruston Bearcats. Admission to the tournament is $6 for adults, students, and children. Student IDs will not be accepted.
