Retif Oil was knocked out of the American Legion’s S.E. Regional Tournament on Monday when Archbishop Shaw-based Refuel survived the bottom of the 9th to take an 8-5 win.

The first three innings were explosive for both teams as Refuel crossed the plate for 7 runs and Retif could only answer with 5 runs. A single run scored in the top of the 9th was insurance for Refuel. In the final inning, Retif had runners on 1st and 2nd bases, but the final two batters hit ground balls for easy outs.

Refuel had 12 hits to Retif’s seven. Retif was hurt by at least five errors.

It was Retif’s second loss in the double elimination tourney. On Saturday, July 5, Retif was shut out by Otto Candies, 3-0. Retif’s 2014 American Legion season record is 14 wins, 8 losses.

While Retif is out of the tournament, there is still a possibility that the team will be invited by American Legion officials to play in the State Tournament which is scheduled July 19-23 at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium. That possibility of snagging an invitation to participate as a “host” team also depends on the outcome of the tournament’s final games over the next two days.
