Retif Oil’s Brandon Briuglio showed all the right stuff on the mound and at the plate. But Retif’s 6th inning rally against Otto Candies (Hahnville) ran out of gas and the boys in blue took their first loss, 5-4, of the American Legion season on Thursday evening.

Retif Oil notched its first loss of the American Legion season after a 6th inning rally fell one run short of tying the game against Otto Candies (Hahnville).

The 5-4 loss by Retif took place Thursday, June 5 at John Ryan Stadium. (Otto defeated Retif in an early season exposition game which does not count in the official record.)

Otto Candies caught Retif napping in the first inning and scored three quick runs on two hits and a walk. The 3-0 deficit proved impossible to make up, although Retif came close. Otto scored one run in the 3rd and 5th innings and heading into the bottom of the 6th, the score was 5-1. Retif loaded the bases and then Brandon Briuglio cleared them by smacking a double. Retif was down by one run, 5-4, when Otto snuffed the rally.

Briuglio pitched the final four innings, giving up one hit, one run, and striking out five batters. He relieved starting pitcher Myles Blunt who absorbed his first loss of the season. In the first three innings, Blunt gave up five hits and four runs, although only one run was earned.

Retif (4-1) plays the Patriots of John Curtis Friday, June 6 at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium. First pitch is 7:15 p.m.
