On Sunday morning, July 6, Retif Oil was one game away from being bounced from the American Legion’s S.E. Regional Tournament at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium. After Sunday’s hearty thrashing of Gauthier-Amedee, 11-3, Retif is still one game away from elimination.

Stung by a 3-0 loss to Hahnville-based Otto Candies in their opening game on Saturday, July 5, Retif reflected, regrouped, and regenerated. As a result, it was a different Retif Oil team on Sunday than the one on the horrific day before.

Retif brings a 14-7 overall record to Monday afternoon’s game. Retif’s opponent will be either Rummel-based Deanie’s Seafood or Archbishop Shaw-based Refuel. Monday’s game is scheduled to start approximately 3:30 p.m., 30 minutes after the conclusion of the tournament’s first game. All the games are at Kirsch-Rooney and the admission is $6.

Retif pounded out 11 hits to Gauthiers’ seven. While Retif had two errors, Gauthier was pinned with a disastrous five mistakes, several of which resulted in unearned runs.

Retif’s winning pitcher was Glynn Hyer who came in to relieve starter Jack Burke in the top of the 6th inning.

Retif’s 2-0 lead evaporated in the 6th inning when Gauthier scored three runs. But Retif scored three runs in the bottom of the 6th to retake the lead for good. Retif knocked the hubcaps off Gauthier with an explosive six runs in the bottom of the 7th. With the bases loaded and no outs, Scott Crabtree laced a pitch into the gap between center and right fields. His 3-RBI triple sealed the deal and Retif stays alive.
