Head baseball coach Joey Latino addresses varsity and pre-freshmen players at a special Mass held Saturday, Feb. 22 in the Chapel of the North American Martyrs.

The 2014 varsity baseball season gets underway tonight (Feb. 27) when the Blue Jays host St. Thomas More in a game that is part of this weekend’s WGNO Classic. First pitch is at 7 p.m. at John Ryan Stadium.

The tournament is being held in several locations because the preferred site — UNO’s Privateer Park — is not yet available.

The WGNO Classic currently has Jesuit playing four games, including tonight’s against St. Thomas More. On Friday, Feb. 28, the Jays play Franklinton at 4 p.m. at Chalmette High School’s baseball field. On Saturday, March 1, the Jays play a double-header at Wesley-Barrow Stadium. The Jesuit – W. Ouachita game gets underway at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Jays playing the Bearcats from Ruston High School.

Last Saturday, Feb. 22, the varsity baseball team welcomed pre-freshmen players at a special Mass celebrated by Jesuit president Fr. Raymond Fitzgerald, S.J.
