Retif Oil left fielder Clayton Deron ’14 makes a fantastic diving catch during the American Legion’s City Series championship game against Peake BMW (Brother Martin) on Tuesday afternoon, July 9, at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

Jesuit-based Retif Oil played Peake BMW (Brother Martin) on Tuesday, July 9 for a fifth time this season, with an American Legion District 1 Championship up for grabs.

Peake wasted no time scoring three runs in the top of the first, but Retif rose to the challenge and answered with a trio of runs in the bottom of the second.

Peake fired right back at Retif in the top of the third, adding three more runs to build a 6-3 lead. Retif was dormant until the fifth inning when a double by Alex Galy ’15 proved to be a spark. Brandon Sequeira ’14 and Miller both sacrificed to push two runs across the plate, closing the gap to just one run, 6-5.

However, in the top of the eighth, Peake added one run for insurance and this shut the door on Retif.

Retif cycled through three pitchers, including James Licciardi ’14, who pitched the first two two innings and took his first loss of the season. Glynn Hyer ’14 relieved him in the third inning. C.J. Avrard ’14 was sent to the mound in the eighth inning as the closer.

Retif returns to Kirsch-Rooney Stadium on Saturday, July 13 to play Gauthier & Amedee in the opening round of the American Legion’s Southeast Regional Tournament. First pitch is 3:30 p.m.
