National Honor Society Inducts 115 New Members

With their family looking on, National Honor Society members and induction candidates enter the Chapel of the North American Martyrs at the NHS Induction Ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013.
At the annual Mass and induction ceremony of the National Honor Society (NHS) on Wednesday evening, 115 Blue Jays were honored as the newest members of the prestigious academic organization. The Mass and ceremony took place in the Chapel of the North American Martyrs where 23 seniors and 92 juniors were formally inducted into the St. Aloysius Gonzaga Chapter of the NHS. Each newly-initiated member received a certificate and pin, given by Jesuit President Fr. Raymond Fitzgerald, S.J. ’76 and Principal Peter Kernion ’90.
The NHS was founded in 1921 to recognize outstanding students who exhibit the four pillars of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Inclusion in the NHS is highly competitive and its members must maintain a minimum 3.75 G.P.A. The NHS recognizes Blue Jays for their academic successes, and also challenges them to become further involved in Jesuit’s various co-curricular organizations and clubs, especially those in which activities and accomplishments are directly related to community service.
At the Mass, chapter president and senior Kevin Yokum challenged his fellow Blue Jays to exemplify the characteristic of leadership in their school lives. NHS members volunteer as lunchtime tutors, Open House tour guides, and serve in other aspects across the campus. Yokum encouraged NHS members to exemplify their academic leadership through continued service to their fellow Blue Jays.
Following the Mass and induction ceremony, a reception was held in the Student Commons for the chapter’s newest honorees and their families. The co-moderators of Jesuit’s NHS chapter are Ms. Nilda Rivera and Mr. Andrew Dykema.
