Jays Whisk Irish of Grace King with 13 Runs in 5 Innings

Senior shortstop Michael Cusimano slides safely into home during Jesuit’s district game against Grace King High School on Tuesday evening, April 2 at Bonnabel’s field. The Jays socked it to the Irish, 13-3, in a game called after the fifth inning because
of the 10-run rule.

Jesuit and Grace King Play Again on Friday, April 5 at 6 PM at John Ryan Stadium

The Jays brought some hot bats to Metairie on Tuesday evening, scattering 10 hits and scoring 13 runs, in their district game against Grace King at Bonnabel’s field. Designated hitter Trent Forshag hit a single each of the three times he came to the plate swinging. Forshag, a sophomore, knocked in three of Jesuit’s runs. Junior second baseman Blake Baker had two hits and two RBIs, and junior third baseman Brandon Sequeira had two hits and four RBIs. The game ended after five innings with the score 13-3.

Senior pitcher Brett Leonhard struck out six batters and notched another win.

Jesuit (18-7) has the home field advantage when the team plays Grace King once more on Friday, April 5 at 6 p.m. at John Ryan Stadium.

In the post-game meeting, coach Joey Latino tries to keep his players focused on what lies ahead: a second game against Grace King on Friday, April 5 at 6 p.m. at John Ryan Stadium. And the eight games that follow and constitute the remainder of the regular season, which is scheduled to run all the way through April 21.
In between innings, pitcher Brett Leonhard patiently scraped mud from his cleats.
Senior Mason Koppens hits a hard grounder and uses his speed to barrel towards first base to beat the throw, all of which unnerved the Irish defense.
Junior third baseman Brandon Sequeira fouls a pitch to left field before sending a sacrifice fly deep to right field. Sequeira also had two hits and a total of four RBIs.
Sophomore Ben Hess makes a nice running catch on a fly ball to right field.
Junior Blake Baker sends one deep to center field for a stand-up double, one of his two hits. The second baseman for the Jays was also credited with two RBIs.
First baseman Dylan Weston singled and stole second base on a wild pitch. When Blake Baker struck one deep to center, Weston rounded third base and headed home to score a run.
As the designated hitter for the Jays, sophomore Trent Forshag batted 1,000, going 3-for-3, all singles.
Trent Forshag scored Jesuit’s first run — he was also credited with three RBIs — and took a couple of high fives from senior Branden Munster and junior Clayton Deron.

... Cusimano advanced to third base on a wild pitch. When Trent Forshag smacked a sizzling grounder, Cusimano took off for home. The Irish missed Forshag at first, then threw home in a valiant effort to nail a sliding Cusimano, who the umpire ruled safe.
Grace King’s pitcher does likewise after senior Mitch Alexander singled, then wandered a little too far before safely diving back.
Senior Brett Leonhard shows his excellent form while pitching only five innings, the result of his teammates’ bats that were hot enough to trigger the 10-run rule.
