Starting strong in their Homecoming game against the Rummel Raiders, the Blue Jays surged ahead with two touchdowns for a 14-0 halftime lead.
Then it all started to crumble for the Jays in the third quarter.
The Raiders tied the score 14-14 and then jumped out to a one touchdown lead halfway through the fourth quarter. With only a few minutes left, Jesuit pulled abreast of the Raiders, 21-21. Then both teams blew chances to win it outright when field goals failed.
And then there was overtime. Taking first possession on the 10-yard line, Jesuit could not move the ball into the end zone on the first three plays. On fourth down, sophomore kicker Crew Jacobs was sent in to salvage a 25-yard field goal. What is usually a chip shot for Jacobs went wide right, but not by much.
Still, it opened the door for Rummel and four plays later, the Raiders kicked a field goal on fourth down. End of Jesuit’s 2013 Homecoming, 24-21, a third game this season that the Blue Jays lost when the other team kicked a last second field goal.
The Blue Jays next opponent is Brother Martin. That game is Friday, Nov. 1 with kickoff at 7 p.m. at Tad Gormley Stadium.
