Andrew Mitchell Pitches a One-Hit Shutout While Blake Baker Turns in Stellar Performances on the Field and at the Plate
Jesuit faced a tough team from Acadiana in the opening game of the state playoffs on Wednesday evening, May 1 at John Ryan Stadium. Senior Andrew Mitchell pitched six innings, giving up a single in the first inning before settling down to strike out 10 Rams and notch his third win of the season. Senior Brett Leonhard wrapped up the last inning in relief for the Jays and struck out two Rams.
The Blue Jay bats were noticeably quieter and accounted for only three hits, all singles by senior designated hitter Branden Munster, junior shortstop Brendon Sequeira, and junior second baseman Blake Baker. The Jays have a knack for making so few hits count. Baker’s single scored Sequeira from second base in the bottom of the fifth inning. It was only one run, but in this game, that was all the Jays needed.
Baker was equally superb on the field playing second base. In the fourth inning, Acadiana hit a sharp grounder up the middle, but Baker dove and snagged the ball, pivoting and throwing to senior first baseman Dylan Weston for the out. Baker made several spectacular catches to throw the runners out at first.
The Jays will travel to Baton Rouge and play Catholic High School on Monday, May 6. The first pitch is slated for 6 p.m. Tickets are priced at $7 for adults and $5 for students and may only be purchased at the gate. Please note that student IDs and season passes will not be accepted at the gate.
