Calling all eligible blood donors to help support one of our own—rising senior Evan Johnson—who is currently in urgent need of blood donations.

Since June 26, Evan has already received two red blood cell transfusions and four platelet transfusions. Due to their short shelf life of only five days, platelets are in especially high demand and must be replenished regularly.

How You Can Help

Donations may be made at any of The Blood Center’s Louisiana or Mississippi locations. When donating, please state that your donation is “Replacement for Evan Johnson.” This ensures that the donation is properly credited to Evan’s file and helps determine if you are a transfusion match.

You can speed up your visit by completing your medical questionnaire ahead of time using FastLane: thebloodcenter.org/fastlane

Platelet Donation Details

If you are already a platelet donor, please donate as soon as possible. Platelet donations require an appointment and can be made every two weeks, provided your post-donation platelet counts are sufficient. Donors should avoid aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications within 72 hours of their scheduled donation.

If you are a first-time platelet donor, have had a transfusion, or have been pregnant, you’ll need to complete a pre-screening visit and donate a small sample of blood to confirm your eligibility. This process ensures your platelet count is high enough for the specialized 2-hour donation. An appointment is strongly recommended.

General Donation Guidelines

To donate blood or platelets, you must:

  • Be in good health
  • Be at least 17 years old and weigh a minimum of 110 lbs
  • 16-year-olds may donate with parental consent if they weigh at least 130 lbs
