NEW ORLEANS — Jesuit High School announced today that, after 43 years of distinguished service, David A. Moreau will step down as director of athletics at the conclusion of the current academic year.

Moreau has served Jesuit for more than four decades. He joined the faculty in 1983, coaching the American Legion program and teaching Louisiana History, health, and P.E. He went on to lead the baseball program as head coach from 1983 to 2005 before moving into athletic administration in 2006. Moreau has served as athletic director since 2007.

“Coach Moreau has been a steady presence for generations of Blue Jays: an educator, coach, and leader who has consistently put the formation and well-being of students first,” said Dr. Jeremy Reuther ’01, Jesuit’s principal. “His work has shaped the culture of our athletic program and the athletic landscapes of New Orleans and Louisiana, strengthening bonds between teammates, coaches, families, and alumni. We are deeply grateful for his decades of service, and we will honor him well as we support a smooth transition for our community.”

During his tenure as head baseball coach, Moreau’s teams won three state championships and nine district championships, compiling an overall record of 532–160. Moreau contributed materially to the growth and expansion of Jesuit’s athletic facilities from the Louis J. Roussell Building to John Ryan Stadium and the Gayle and Tom Benson Arena. He is a member of the Louisiana Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the New Orleans Prep Hall of Fame.

As athletic director, Moreau helped guide a period of sustained growth in Blue Jay athletics, including the addition of newer programs such as bowling, bass fishing, rugby, lacrosse, gymnastics, and powerlifting. He also championed multi-sport participation, noting that Jesuit grew to 66 multi-sport athletes in a single year as the school worked to reverse early specialization trends.

In 2023, Moreau was named a recipient of Jesuit’s John Paquette Award, a recognition established to honor faculty members who have completed 40 or more years of service. The award is named for John Paquette of the Class of 1925, who served as Jesuit’s registrar for 70 years.

Reflecting on his years at Jesuit, Moreau has said, “I like to be a part of something great, and Jesuit is great… It’s a place that helps so many people do special things.”

Jesuit will share additional details regarding leadership of the athletic department in the weeks ahead. Moreau will support a seamless transition for coaches, student-athletes, and families through the end of the school year.

Founded in 1847, Jesuit is a Catholic, college-preparatory school for boys in grades 8–12. Dedicated to forming men of faith and men for others, Jesuit offers 15 varsity sports and more than 100 co-curricular opportunities for students.
