Anthony Scelfo ’05 was recently named offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Middle Tennessee State University. A New Orleans native and standout student-athlete, Scelfo’s journey from Blue Jay quarterback to Division I play-caller reflects a lifetime dedicated to athletics, leadership, and football excellence.

During his time at Jesuit, Scelfo starred as one of the most accomplished multi-sport athletes in school history. A two-year starting quarterback, he led the Blue Jays to a 20-4 record, guiding them to multiple district titles and deep playoff runs. As a senior, he earned honorable mention 5A All-State honors, was named District 10-5A MVP, and collected first-team all-district and all-Orleans Parish accolades. His athletic versatility extended beyond the gridiron, as he also excelled on the baseball diamond, becoming the first athlete in 50 years to be named MVP in both football and baseball in the New Orleans Catholic League. Scelfo was later recognized as Jesuit’s Athlete of the Year and The Clarion Herald Male Athlete of the Year.

Following graduation, Scelfo continued his dual-sport success at Tulane University, where he played both football quarterback and baseball for the Green Wave. A two-sport letterman, he balanced spring football practices with baseball competition, demonstrating the discipline and work ethic that would define his career. On the football field, Scelfo saw action in multiple games, including appearances against LSU, SMU, Army, and Tulsa, and scored Tulane’s lone touchdown against the nationally ranked Tigers in Baton Rouge. In baseball, his talent earned him first-team All-Conference USA honors, and he was eventually selected in the eighth round of the MLB Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays, spending four seasons in the organization’s minor league system.

After his playing career, Scelfo transitioned seamlessly into coaching, building a résumé that includes stops at UTSA, Northwestern State, and Southeastern Louisiana. Most recently, he served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Southeastern Louisiana, where his offenses ranked among the nation’s best and helped the Lions post a 9-4 record in 2025. He worked under head coach Frank Scelfo, his father and a longtime collegiate coach, continuing a family tradition deeply rooted in football.
