Soccer Builds Momentum on the Pitch

Soccer has opened the season with high expectations and a clear focus on competing for a championship. With a strong core of returning players and emerging young talent, the Jays have emphasized discipline, unity, and consistency from the opening whistle.

Head coach Hubie Collins has made cohesion a central point of emphasis as the team begins the year. Togetherness on and off the field has been a defining theme, shaping both preparation and performance.

“We want to be a solid, cohesive unit both on and off the pitch,” Collins said.

That mindset is evident in Jesuit’s defensive approach. Under Collins’ philosophy, defending is a shared responsibility, with every player accountable for specific roles within the team structure. This collective effort has helped the Jays establish a strong foundation early in the season. Offensively, Jesuit looks to create mismatches and apply sustained pressure while maintaining balance and organization. The ability to remain disciplined while attacking has made the Jays difficult to defend.

That approach has already proven beneficial. Jesuit opened the season with a 3–0 win over St. Paul’s, highlighted by the game-winning goal from senior Gabe Zeringue in the 28th minute off a through ball from senior Beau Hellmers. The Jays followed with an emphatic 7–0 victory over COPPA Acadiana. Momentum continued with a 2–0 win over a tough Catholic team. The match tested Jesuit’s discipline and composure, and the Jays responded with a controlled performance that showcased their defensive strength and maturity against a quality opponent.

That confidence carried into a rivalry matchup against Holy Cross, a game both teams approached with intensity. The opening stages were tightly contested, with neither side able to gain a clear advantage early. The Blue Jays broke through late in the first half when Hellmers scored the opening goal, shifting the tone of the match and sending Jesuit into halftime with momentum. After the break, the offense adjusted tactically and took control. The Jays capitalized on their opportunities in the second half, with goals from Hellmers, sophomore Alex Rousselle, and sophomore Jacob Kee to pull away and secure an impressive rivalry victory.

The win sends Jesuit into the Christmas break with confidence and momentum, setting a strong tone for the remainder of the season and positioning the Jays to continue building toward their goals. Follow the schedule and support the soccer Jays throughout the season.
