Burks, Blanchard, Mullen Combine for Four State Track Titles

The track and field team made Blue Jay history for their performances in the 2025 LHSAA 9-5A Division I state championships at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium, finishing as state runner-up. Several athletes broke or approached state records and earned high national rankings.
Sophomore Ja’ir Burks swept the hurdles, winning both the 110m and 300m hurdles. He set a new state record in the 110m hurdles at 13.62, ranking him 17th in the country, and captured the 300m hurdles title in 38.18. Those two victories gave him a pair of state crowns. Burks becomes the first sophomore to break 14.00 barrier in the 110m hurdles, also setting a school record.
“Ja’ir capped his sophomore year with two state championships,” said head coach Nick Accardo. “He surpassed the LHSAA composite state record and posted the fastest time for a sophomore in the country in the 110-meter hurdles. I look forward to his future achievements.”

Senior Brady Mullen claimed his second straight 3200m title in 9:09.68—just off his own state record—and added a runner-up finish in the 1600m. In that race, he was edged by .25 seconds when Catholic’s runner lunged across the tape first. Mullen, who battled injuries for much of the season, will head to Harvard this fall on a cross country scholarship.
“I think I gave it my all in that,” Mullen said about the 1,600. “At the end, I was kind of swimming. After that I was like, I know how close it is in the track meet, I just have to lock in and get this win (in the 3,200) no matter how I feel.”
Junior Brady Monohan joined Mullen in the 3200m, placing third with a personal-best 9:19.36. In the 1600m, junior Connor Fanberg took fourth in 4:18.55.
Senior Brandt Blanchard captured his first individual state championship in the 800m, posting a time of 1:52.58—just 2.58 seconds shy of the 1:50 state record.
Overall, the team’s depth shone across sprints, distance races, and field events, securing enough points to finish just one point shy of the state title and earn a narrow second-place finish.
