A 6th-inning grand slam from Sean Seghers allowed the Oilers to breathe easy on Monday night. The hit sealed an eventual 11-6 victory, a district championship, and a ticket into the Legion state tournament.

After defeating Wilson Electrical by a score of 9-2, the Retif Oilers put up 11 runs in both games against Best Chevrolet (BC) to sweep the District 1 Championship.

In the final day of the tournament when BC had to beat the Oilers twice, the possibility of a second game seemed strong in the 4th and 5th innings. Leading 4-1 in the 4th, the Oilers surrendered five runs in the bottom of the frame and could only get one run back to tie the game in the 5th. Will Hellmers hit a double in the 6th, and, in the blink of an eye, the bases were loaded via walks. Then, Seghers connected for the grand slam dagger.

Retif will face Crowley Millers on Friday, July 6 at 6:30 p.m. (or 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 3) in Round 1 of the Louisiana American Legion State Championship. Kirsch-Rooney Stadium is the site of the tournament.

Top performers from Game 3 included left-fielder Seghers, who had two singles along with his grand slam; starting pitcher Will Moran, who batted 2-for-2 with a single and a 2-RBI triple; and the infield duo of Matt Alexander and Seth Dardar, who each recorded three singles.
