Blue Jays Rally for Thrilling 37-33 Victory Over Rummel
Facing a 10-point deficit with under five minutes to play, the Blue Jays scored 14 unanswered points to stay alive in the Catholic League playoff race.

The football team delivered one of its most thrilling victories of the season in a Catholic League showdown that came down to the final minute, overcoming multiple deficits to defeat Rummel 37-33. Fueled by a remarkable performance from junior running back Michael Cerruti and a late-game surge, the Blue Jays rallied from 10 points down in the fourth quarter to secure a dramatic district victory.
With postseason implications on the line, both teams entered the matchup ranked among the top five in the Division I Select power rankings. Rummel (7-1, 4-1) held the No. 3 spot and remained in contention for a share of the Catholic League title, while fifth-ranked Jesuit (6-2, 3-2) looked to build on its 24-8 victory over John Curtis.
Rummel wasted little time establishing momentum, jumping out to a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter. The Blue Jays answered in the second when Cerruti broke through for a touchdown with 6:20 remaining before halftime. Sophomore Charlie Corbello converted the extra point to cut the deficit to 14-7, but the Raiders responded with another touchdown to extend their advantage to 21-7. With just three seconds remaining in the half, Corbello connected on a field goal to send the Jays into the locker room trailing 21-10.
The Blue Jays emerged from halftime determined to close the gap. A touchdown by junior quarterback Mani Vandeweghe, followed by another successful Corbello extra point, brought Jesuit within four at 21-17. The Jays continued to battle, eventually moving ahead 23-21 as the momentum began to shift. But the Raiders were far from finished, answering with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to reclaim control with a 33-23 advantage. With less than five minutes remaining and facing another double-digit deficit, the Blue Jays would need a remarkable comeback to keep their hopes of victory alive.
Behind an outstanding rushing performance from Cerruti, who finished the night with 236 yards and three touchdowns, the Blue Jays mounted another comeback. Cerruti’s third touchdown brought the Jays within striking distance, setting the stage for a dramatic finish. With the game hanging in the balance, senior Matthew Jackel recovered a crucial onside kick near midfield, sending the Jesuit sideline, Gizzard, and Blue Jay Band into a frenzy. The recovery gave the offense one final opportunity to complete the comeback.
Vandeweghe made the opportunity count. With less than a minute remaining, he broke free for an 11-yard touchdown run, completing the improbable comeback and putting Jesuit ahead 37-33.
After falling behind 14-0 in the opening quarter and facing a 10-point deficit late in the fourth, the Blue Jays refused to surrender, scoring 14 unanswered points to claim the victory. Cerruti’s dominant rushing performance, Jackel’s perfectly timed onside kick recovery, and Vandeweghe’s game-winning touchdown provided the defining moments of an unforgettable Catholic League battle.
The victory improves the Blue Jays to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in District 9-5A, while Rummel falls to 7-2 and 4-2 in district play. The win also strengthens Jesuit’s postseason position heading into the final week of the regular season, giving the Jays valuable momentum as they prepare for the Division I Select playoffs.
