Blue Jay Mothers’ Mass & Reflection

Blue Jay mothers, grandmothers, parents of alumni, and dedicated volunteers were welcomed to campus for the annual Mothers’ Mass and Reflection, a cherished tradition that celebrates the vital role women play in the formation of Blue Jays.

Held in the Chapel of the North American Martyrs, the liturgy was celebrated by Fr. John Brown, S.J., who reflected in his homily on the centrality of the Eucharist in the life of faith. Drawing from the Gospel, Fr. Brown emphasized that Christ offers not simply physical nourishment, but the “bread of life” that sustains a deeper, fuller kind of life—one rooted in God. He invited those gathered to approach the Mass with renewed awareness, noting that the Eucharist is not merely symbolic but transformative. Just as the bread and wine are changed, so too are we called to place ourselves on the altar and allow God to shape our hearts more closely to His own.

Following the Mass, Fr. Anthony McGinn, S.J. ’66, offered a thoughtful reflection centered on gratitude and the vocation of motherhood. He began with a simple but profound message of thanks, acknowledging the countless sacrifices, challenges, and acts of love that define the lives of mothers. Parenting, he noted, is increasingly complex in today’s world, requiring not only perseverance but deep faith and trust in God’s grace.

Fr. McGinn highlighted three key virtues found throughout the Gospel—gratitude, humility, and obedience. These virtues, he explained, help counteract the pressures of modern culture and orient families toward God’s plan. He also spoke to the daily realities of motherhood, pointing to the patience, organization, encouragement, and example that shape the lives of young men. These qualities, lived out consistently and often quietly, form the foundation upon which Jesuit’s mission rests.

In reflecting on these virtues, Fr. McGinn encouraged mothers to recognize the grace already at work in their lives and to remain grounded in gratitude—even amid challenges. His words underscored the partnership between Jesuit and families in forming young men of faith, intellect, and service.

Jesuit is deeply grateful for the unwavering support, faith, and dedication of its Blue Jay mothers, grandmothers, and families. Their commitment to nurturing their sons in both faith and character is essential to the mission.

Following the Mass and reflection, guests gathered for a reception in St. Ignatius Hall, where they enjoyed fellowship and continued celebration of the shared mission that unites the Jesuit community.
