Track & Field Earns Six All-American Honors at Nike Indoor Nationals

Five members of the Blue Jay track and field team competed against the nation’s top athletes at the Nike Indoor National Championship this past weekend, combining for six All-American honors and two Composite State Indoor records in a historic showing for the program.
Seniors Connor Fanberg and Joe Accardo, juniors Ja’ir Burks and Patrick Smith, and sophomore Rhys Grant each represented the Blue Jays on the national stage. All five earned All-American recognition over the course of the three-day meet.

The 4xMile relay team of Fanberg, Accardo, Smith, and Grant opened competition with a third-place finish. Their performance set both a school record and a Louisiana Composite State Indoor record while earning All-American honors.
Burks followed with a strong performance in the 60-meter hurdles. After advancing out of the preliminary round with the 10th-fastest qualifying time, he secured a spot in the finals with the eighth-fastest time in the semifinal. Burks placed fifth in the championship race, earning his first All-American honor while setting a school record and a Composite State Indoor record.

Fanberg added to the weekend’s accomplishments in the final event, earning selection to the All-Star Distance Medley Relay. Competing for Team Louisiana, Fanberg ran the anchor leg to help secure a fourth-place finish and his second All-American honor of the meet.
In total, the Blue Jays earned six All-American honors and set two Composite State Indoor records, marking the most successful national meet in program history.
The performance in New York builds on a series of strong results this spring. At the Patrick Ruth Relays, the 4×800 relay team of junior David Quintana, Accardo, Grant, and Fanberg placed first, while senior Drago Cvitanovich earned a first-place finish in the pole vault. Junior Oliver Hartman added a second-place finish in the javelin. The distance medley relay and sprint medley relay teams each recorded third-place finishes, and the 4×100 relay team placed second.
At the St. Joseph’s meet, the Blue Jays turned in another strong showing. Burks placed second in the 100 meters, while Smith led a sweep of the 1600 meters with senior Finn Connolly and juniors Andrew Nimmo and PJ Fitzmorris following in second through fourth place. The 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams each earned first-place finishes, and the 4×400 relay team placed second. Senior Spencer Waguespack added a second-place finish in the shot put.
