Tennis Builds Momentum Behind Young Core, Defeats Newman 5–2

Tennis continues to build momentum this season, most recently earning a strong 5–2 victory over Newman in a key matchup.
Led by head coach Scott Schlessinger, the Blue Jays are navigating a season of transition following the graduation of five seniors from last year’s state championship squad. Despite the turnover, Schlessinger describes this year’s group as “young and hungry,” a mindset that has translated into early-season success and steady improvement.
Senior captains Cody Martinez and Matthew Bohnet anchor the team, providing leadership and experience to a developing lineup. Martinez, who serves as the team’s singles leader, has set the tone in competition, while Bohnet continues to guide the team both on and off the court. A major contributor to this year’s success has been freshman Thomas Melius, who has quickly emerged as a key piece of the lineup. Slotted at No. 2 singles, Melius has impressed with his consistency and work ethic. Schlessinger describes him as a “workhorse,” and his versatility is evident as he also competes on the No. 1 doubles team alongside senior J.P. Costello.
In February, the team opened the season with strong showings at the Parkview Invitational, earning multiple team victories against quality opponents. The team has also recorded decisive wins in district play, defeating opponents such as Rummel, Country Day, and Haynes to establish itself as a contender once again.
The Blue Jays continue play at the McGill-Toolen Invitational March 27 and 28, followed by the last regular season match up against Brother Martin at 4 p.m. on April 9 at City Park tennis courts. Follow along to support the Jays.
