Round Four: Blue & White Dual Kicks-Off Another Promising Season

Wrestling kicked off its season with the annual inter-squad Blue and White Dual, an event that showcased both the promise of a new generation of Blue Jay wrestlers and the toughness and determination the team is known for. That’s not to say there wasn’t fun to be had—veterans of the team served as “coaches” for the event. Pictured above, juniors Zach Sands and Owen Truxillo and sophomore William Roniger dressed up as their coaches Jon Orillion ’01, Matt Firmin ’10, and Will Honer, respectively. Coming off three straight state championships, the Jays enter the year with a goal of continued improvement that will keep them in contention for yet another title.
Head Coach Jon Orillion maintains the same expectation as always for his team—“to be better than we were the day before.” He believes that “focusing on the day-to-day process” is the key for the Blue Jays to come out on top once again.
This season’s leadership core consists of four senior captains: Michael Barnett, Christopher Stricker, Max Belsome, and Quinn Anderson. Each brings valuable experience and leadership to the program. Additionally, junior Isaac Orillion and sophomore William Roniger are key returners to watch. Barnett, Belsome, and Orillion already have experience wrestling in the state finals, while Stricker placed at state last season.
Although the team graduated eight of last year’s fourteen starters, Coach Orillion emphasizes that the program’s depth and player development will allow new starters to transition smoothly into the lineup. He looks to “continue to develop the Blue Jays who will enter the lineup for the first time as starters and see that development pay off for them and the team in the chase for number four.”
With a mix of experience and emerging talent, seniors Conner Vargas, Brady Hunter, Sean Timler, Sal Signorelli, and Will Berry, along with juniors Gage Grilletta, Truxillo, and Sands, are also expected to make an impact.
The wrestling team’s first official meet is on Saturday, November, 8 at the Warrior Open. Support the team this season by following their roster and schedule here.
