To continue its trend of following close wins with commanding wins, the Blue Jay baseball team swept the Purple Knights of St. Augustine to remain undefeated in District 9-5A play. Jesuit (15-5, 4-0) sits atop the Catholic League standings with four district series left on the schedule.

Hellmers’s Slam Seals Deal
Game 2 (March 26): Jesuit 9, St. Aug 0

The numbers have been counted. With a dozen strikeouts and only 24 batters faced, junior pitcher Will Hellmers struck out half of the Purple Knights who came to the plate Tuesday night at RBI Field.

Hellmers, all in one game, ended his performance with pitching and hitting milestones worthy of two days’ work. On top of his 12 strikeouts, he pitched a three-hit shutout without allowing a single walk. Through four innings, Hellmers retired 12 batters in a row. At the plate he had a field day, going 3-for-4 with a single, an RBI double, and a grand slam in the Jays’ 9-0 win over St. Augustine. He finished with five RBIs, and his grand slam in the top of the sixth certainly sealed the deal as the Jays would go on to have seven runs in that inning alone!

Favalora Finds Timely Hit
Game 1 (March 23): Jesuit 3, St. Aug 2

With the game tied the bottom of the fourth, Parker Serio hit a single and stole second. Chris Favalora then smashed an RBI double to score Serio, the eventual game-winning run.

Brenden Berggren pitched a three-strikeout complete game, earning the 3-2 win at John Ryan Stadium and setting the Jays up for another sweep.

In Their Words…

“When everybody is [standing] up in the dugout, it’s easy to keep your composure,” Will Hellmers said after his grand slam. “Most of us have been playing together for two or three years together now, so we’re all close. We always have each other’s backs, and tonight was no different. It was a great night.”

Head coach Kenny Goodlett also focused on the team camaraderie, saying, “I like our locker room. They get along well, and that plays a big role because at practice they are competing but they are also cheering each other on.”
