Behind a balanced offensive attack and a strong defensive effort, the Blue Jays controlled the game from the opening possession, securing a 24-8 homecoming victory over John Curtis Friday night at Strawberry Stadium in Hammond. The district win improved the Blue Jays’ record to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in District 9-5A.

The Jays established momentum early with an eight-play scoring drive capped by a six-yard touchdown run from junior quarterback Mani Vandenweghe. Sophomore kicker Charlie Corbello extended the lead with a 37-yard field goal before senior safety Jack Maguire intercepted a tipped pass to give the Blue Jays another scoring opportunity. Junior quarterback Sully Sullivan capitalized on the turnover, connecting with junior wide receiver Grant LeBeouf for a 31-yard touchdown. LeBeouf made an impressive contested catch over multiple defenders, sending the Jays into halftime with a 17-0 advantage.

The defense delivered a strong performance throughout the game, recording two interceptions and multiple sacks while limiting the Patriots’ offensive opportunities. Junior Michael Cerruti added a six-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 24-0. Although John Curtis found the end zone late in the game, the Blue Jays prevented any further scoring, including a critical pass breakup with less than five minutes remaining that helped secure the victory.

Cerruti led the rushing attack with 70 yards on 14 carries, while Vandenweghe contributed 60 yards on 12 carries. Sullivan completed seven of 13 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown, demonstrating the effectiveness of the Jays’ two-quarterback approach.

“I thought we did a great job in the trenches and tackling in space,” Head Coach Ryan Manale said. “Our kids prepared, but more than that our player leadership led. That’s a reflection of our seniors and our upperclassmen in our program.”

The Blue Jays will look to carry that momentum into their next District 9-5A matchup against Archbishop Rummel on Friday, October 30 at Tad Gormley Stadium.
