The Jays toppled Holy Cross on Wednesday, January 10.

The Holy Cross Student Center hosted one of Louisiana’s most anticipated dual matches so far this season as the Blue Jays battled the Tigers on the wrestling mat. Both teams gained attention this winter as Catholic League favorites.

The dual began with Holy Cross forfeiting the first match of the evening, yielding a default win to Jesuit’s two-time champion, senior Spencer Langosa. This early advantage energized the Gizzard, fueling chants and cheers that lasted for the entire event.

In the lightweight division, Jesuit faced setbacks in two matchups, but the Jays carried the day. Returning 120-pound state champion Bodi Harris, a Jesuit junior, secured a major decision over Holy Cross senior Vincent Vidacovich. Sophomore JP Webre picked up a hard-earned 8-3 decision against Tiger senior Nicholas Sauerwin, and sophomore Matthew Krail added to Jesuit’s tally with a technical fall victory over junior JR Cimini at 138 pounds.

Freshman Isaac Orillion, a dominant force in Louisiana’s 144-pound weight class this season, solidified his reputation as a top state contender with a decisive victory over Holy Cross junior Gunner Guidry. Despite Guidry’s recent move to a lower weight class to heighten competition, Orillion’s skill prevailed, winning the matchup by decision. At 150 pounds, the competition was intense as Blue Jay junior Wyatt Mire secured a decision win.

In the final matches, the Jays overcame any uncertainty by pinning three opponents thanks to impressive performances by senior Patrick Matthews, Jackson Calderaro, and junior Cam Himel.

The Blue Jays triumphed over the Tigers with a final score of 38-23, a result that will influence seeding in the upcoming Louisiana Classic this weekend at the Lamar-Dixon Center in Baton Rouge.
