At the New Orleans metro swim championships Saturday at Franco’s Health Club & Spa in Mandeville, Jesuit junior Enzo Solitario won the 100-yard freestyle in record-breaking fashion, shattering a time that was earned some two decades ago by a fellow Blue Jay.

Solitario, selected as the outstanding swimmer at the boys meet, finished the 100 in 46.17 seconds to beat the previous record of 46.66 set in 2002 by former Southern Cal swimmer Alton Smith ’03. Adding to the excitement, he won the 50 and 100 freestyle events over the previously reigning metro state champion in both events.

“I couldn’t break that record without him,” Solitario admitted wryly. “He was pushing me, and I was pushing him. That kind of leads to the times that we see.”

The rivals swam against one another in the two events “countless” times through the years, “and I think I finished ahead of him a few times,” Solitario said. “But I think he had gotten me a majority of the time.”

“We needed a good, fast meet,” said head coach Bret Hanemann ’85. “At district, they stepped up place-wise. At this meet, they stepped up time-wise to get us ready for state.”

Senior Jack Primeaux placed first in the 100 backstroke, also significantly contributing to the team’s metro victory.

With the Blue Jays as the reigning Division I state champion, the LHSAA state meet is set for Nov. 17-18 in Sulphur.
