Will Landrieu’s sharp-shooting at the end of the 1st Quarter set off a 16 point swing that set the tone for the rest of the game.

On Saturday, the Jesuit basketball team defeated Evangel Christian in the regional round of the LHSAA state playoffs. Junior Elijah Morgan and senior Will Landrieu paved the way for the Jays on offense in the 57-47 victory over the Eagles.

Although Elijah Morgan led the Jays in scoring with 19 points, Will Landrieu scored 11 of his 17 point in the first quarter, hitting three 3-pointers in the quarter that ended with a 16-5 advantage for Jesuit.

And the Jays never looked back. Although Evangel never let up, the Jesuit defense maintained pressure throughout the game to keep their lead intact. The Jays racked up 14 steals and out-performed their opponent on the boards 31-25. Zach DeBlieux led the team with 5 steals, and Noah Varnado accounted for 11 rebounds.

“We did a good job of executing our game plan, especially on defense,” said head basketball coach Chris Jennings ’78. “I was happy with how we played overall, but we need to make sure we limit our turnovers moving forward in post-season play.”

The Jays advance to the quarterfinal round of the LHSAA playoff bracket for the first time since 2010. Jesuit will face McKinley High School (Baton Rouge) at their gym on Friday night at 7 PM.
