Following a big time win in the Birdcage on Friday night, the Blue Jay basketball team floundered on Tuesday night in St. Augustine’s gym, losing to the Purple Knights 42-27.

The team’s best basketball was played in the first quarter, as the Jays bested the Purple Knights 11-9 in the first eight minutes of play. Elijah Morgan led the charge, knocking down three big three pointers and giving the Jays an early lead.

Unfortunately, the wells dried up completely, with the Jays only able to score four points in the second quarter, seven in the third, and five in the fourth.

The team shot just 31 percent from the field, compared to St. Augustine’s 45 percent. Elijah Morgan was the leading scorer for the Jays with 13 points.

The loss moves the Jays into a tough spot in the district race, moving to 3-3 in the Catholic league, and 14-11 overall. There’s still plenty of basketball to play, though, as the Jays turn the corner into the second round of district play.

The game against St. Thomas Aquinas for Friday night has been cancelled, so the Blue Jays have a chance to regroup before taking on Holy Cross on Tuesday night at  home.
