Fr. Fitzgerald passed away on Saturday, Sept. 17, two and a half years after he announced that he had been diagnosed with ALS. He had been receiving medical care at the St. Alphonsus Rodríguez Pavilion in Grand Coteau, LA since June of 2015. Up to his death he continued his spiritual ministry, which included his primary mission of praying for the Church and the Society of Jesus. He also managed to direct retreats privately and maintained extensive contacts via email.
The funeral Mass for Fr. Fitzgerald took place on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Grand Coteau, LA. The burial followed the funeral Mass in the Jesuit Cemetery adjacent to the church.
