Patron Named Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month
State champion wrestler Senior Guy Patron, Jr. has been selected as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for February. The monthly award-winners are chosen in voting by the Greater New Orleans Sports Award Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Patron posted a perfect 6-0 mark in February with all of his victories by pin in the first period. He capped the month by winning the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Division I state wrestling championship in the 195-pound division. All of his state title matches were also won by pins in the first period. He was named the most outstanding wrestler of the state tournament, a first in decades for a Jesuit wrestler. Patron also received a congressional nomination for application to the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
For his career, Patron, who also played football, was a three-time state finalist. A two-time captain for the wrestling team, he is a three-time member of Team Louisiana, placing as high as round 12 in USA in Jr. Greco Nationals. He is a USA Wrestling All American and was listed as a future Olympian presented by the U.S. Olympic committee.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
