The Jesuit lacrosse team opened the 2016 season in winning fashion. The Blue Jays beat Spain Park (Birmingham, Alabama), 13-10. The game took place on Saturday, Jan. 23, on a chilly, sunny day in Chappapeela Sports Park in Hammond.

Team captain and senior Max Murret tallied four goals. Junior Michael Smart led all scorers with five. Both play the attack position. Senior goalie Rob Hinyub recorded 12 saves. There are 16 seniors on this year’s varsity roster. The program also includes a JV team and U-15 squad.

The 2016 team is coached by Steve Krobert ’05, who is assisted by Nick Helinski (defense) and Andrew Scott ’13 (offense). Krobert, who helped launch the program when he was a student at Carrollton & Banks, works with goalies and face-off specialists.

The Blue Jays will attempt to win their fifth straight Louisiana High School Lacrosse League state championship after notching LHSLL titles in 2012-2015.

The LHSLL consists of two Division I districts. The Jays compete in D-I South, which includes Brother Martin, Holy Cross, Mandeville, St. Martin’s, rival St. Paul’s, and two teams from Mississippi; Oceans Springs and Pascagoula.

On Friday, Jan, 29, the Blue Jays leave for Dallas, Texas, where they’ll compete in the Jesuit Dallas Invitational on the campus of Jesuit College Preparatory School.
