Florida has a new white alligator.

Michael White, a 1995 alumnus who played basketball for the Blue Jays, has been hired to coach the Gators basketball team at the University of Florida. White replaces Billy Donovan who left for the National Basketball Association. Donovan is the new coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

White, who averaged more than 20 points as a shooting guard during his senior year at Carrollton and Banks, played college basketball at Ole Miss. From there he became an assistant coach at Jacksonville State before returning to his college alma mater as an assistant in Oxford, Mississippi. In Ruston, White compiled an impressive record of 101-40 over four seasons. He was the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Coach of the Year in 2013.

Blue Jay head basketball coach Chris Jennings ’78, who coached White at Jesuit, is proud of his former player.

“He’s worked hard to get a job like that and he’ll have to work even harder to keep it,” Jennings said. “I wish him nothing but the best.”

White’s father Kevin is the athletic director at Duke University. Danny White ’98, Michael’s younger brother who also played for Jennings and the Blue Jays, is the athletic director at the University of Buffalo.
