2017 Book Day: Procedures, Schedules, and Resources

More than 1,500 envelopes were sent to the post office on Friday, July 14 for Jesuit’s Summer Mailing. Each student and his parents will receive this packet filled with information about the upcoming Book Day and school year. Parents and students, please carefully read the instructions below to successfully navigate Book Day 2017.

Book Day Schedule

Parents of new students are strongly discouraged from participating in Book Day. Please allow your son the opportunity to attend Book Day with his Big Brother.

When arriving for Book Day, students should line up in the green stairwell to be directed into the second floor hallway. Book Day stations will begin outside of Room 227. (See dress code/uniform information.)

Students not properly groomed and attired will not be allowed to proceed on Book Day. Please review the Bulletin for specific dress code and grooming requirements.

Tuesday, August 15

Seniors – 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.

Juniors – 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Sophomores – 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.


Wednesday, August 16

Pre-freshmen (A-L) – 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.

Pre-freshmen (M-Z) – 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

Freshmen (A-L) – 10:30 a.m. – 11:15 a.m.

Freshmen (M-Z) – 11:15 a.m. – 12:00 noon

What to do if the student cannot come at the time scheduled for his grade level:

  1. Anyone can be designated to meet the student’s obligations at the scheduled time for his grade level—except for taking the yearbook/ID picture. A picture make-up date will be scheduled later.
  2. If someone cannot be found to come in his place at the scheduled time, he will have to wait until the first day of school to get his books. The Book Day area is not set up to handle multiple grade levels simultaneously.

Mandatory Forms to Submit on Book Day

Each student’s Emergency Data Sheet(s) will be emailed to his parents. The following forms (2-4) are available only on the website. Please download and print these forms that are required to be submitted at the beginning of Book Day. These forms must be completed at home and signed by the student and a parent/guardian for the student to participate in Book Day. A student who does not have these mandatory forms completed and signed will not be allowed to participate in Book Day activities.

Mandatory Forms for All Students

  1. Emergency Data Sheet(s): Parents will receive an email with an attached Emergency Data Sheet for each student. Please print and sign the Emergency Data Sheet(s). For students with multiple Emergency Data Sheets, all must be completed. Verify that all information is correct and make any changes if necessary.
  2. Bulletin Review/ Honor Code/ Media Release Form: This form serves as a written acknowledgement that the student has read and agrees to abide by the rules and procedures of the Bulletin and the principles of the Jesuit Honor Code. Additionally this form grants Jesuit permission to take and use video and photographs of students in publications. It must be signed by the student and a parent/guardian. A student who has not submitted this form by Book Day will not be allowed to begin class. (Download: Bulletin Review/ Honor Code/ Media Release Form.)
  3. Guidance Questionnaire: Jesuit’s guidance office requires all students to complete an informational questionnaire before attending Book Day. Read the guidance office’s welcome letter.(Download: Guidance Questionnaire.)
  4. Student Automobile Registration: Students who drive to school must register their automobiles in case Jesuit needs to contact them about their vehicles. (Download: Student Automobile Registration.)

Monetary Transactions & Procedures

All financial arrangements for the first semester should have been concluded by Friday, July 14.  Students may not be able to attend class if financial obligations have not been cleared through the finance office, Room 420 in the administration wing – phone (504) 483-3845.

On Book Day, students will submit their mandatory forms and then receive a Fee Bill tailored to their own grade level and class schedule.

  1. Fee Bill: (Check should be made out to Jesuit High School)
    The Fee Bill will list which books students need along with other fees appropriate to their grade level (such as senior graduation fee, junior retreats, yearbook, name tags, etc.). This fee bill will be modified according to what students purchase or decline to purchase. When students have completed Book Day selections, they will be able to write a single check for all purchases made.

    1. Textbooks: A book list tailored to the final schedule will be issued with the final schedule on Book Day. In early July, students should have received in the mail a schedule-specific book list with their preliminary schedule. Please do not use this book list at the Blue Jay Shop. Course changes may have resulted in textbook changes. The preliminary book list was made available so students could determine which books they already have and which books they still need to buy. (See Used Book Sale for information about the option to purchase discounted non-state textbooks.)
      No Refunds: Books purchased from the Blue Jay Shop may not be returned for a refund. Books should not be purchased if there is any uncertainty about the actual need for the books.
    2. School-Issued Supplies: These supplies from the Blue Jay Shop are included on the student’s Fee Bill. All P.E. clothing, name tags, student planner, and two combination locks (one for his book locker and one for his P.E. locker) are school-issued and must be purchased from the Blue Jay Shop in person on Book Day.
    3. School Calendar: On Book Day, each family will receive one complimentary printed school calendar. Additional calendars will be available on Book Day for $3 each. Families may view a PDF of this printed school calendar online at jesuitnola.org/calendars. Also on this page are regularly-updated online calendars with further details.
  2. Student ID Pictures: (Check made out to Loupe Photography)
    All students will take ID pictures. This picture will also be used in the yearbook for underclassmen, while seniors will have their tuxedo photos used instead. Optional picture packages may be purchased from Loupe Photography.

    1. Grooming/Dress Code: All students must have a proper haircut and they must be clean-shaven. (See the Bulletin for full dress code details.)
    2. Underclassmen must bring a dress shirt, coat, and tie for the pictures.
    3. Seniors need only a shirt with a collar for their ID picture. Each senior must schedule an appointment with Loupe Photography to take his tuxedo picture no later than August 30.
  3. Cafeteria: (Check made out to Jesuit Cafeteria)
    Cafeteria staff will assist students to set up new accounts and take deposits for existing accounts on Book Day. If a student plans to purchase breakfast/lunch from the cafeteria, he should deposit a minimum of $30 into his account on Book Day.   4. Senior Rings: (Check made out to Balfour)
    Seniors will pay the balance due on their senior rings.

Used Book, Used Uniform, and Used Novel Sale

Organized each year by parent volunteers, the used book sale allows students and their families to sell their used non-state textbooks and save money on purchasing books for next school year. This year we will also sell donated used uniforms and used novels from English class. The used uniforms and used novels are a donation to Jesuit. For details, visit jesuitnola.org/used-book-sale.

The bookstore will be open prior to the first day of school during the following times: Aug. 7 – 11 (9 AM – 4 PM) with extended hours on Aug. 9 (7 AM – 5 PM) and Aug.  14 (4 – 6PM). Only transactions associated with Book Days will be accepted on Aug. 15 (seniors, juniors, and sophomores) and Aug. 16 (freshmen and pre-freshmen).

Transportation / Online Carpool Forum

Learn about drop-off /pick-up procedures and student parking online at jesuitnola.org/student-transportation. If you would like to form or join a carpool, use Jesuit’s online carpool forum. Students who drive to school must register their vehicles with the school.

Parent Volunteer Activities & Information

There are numerous opportunities to volunteer and many events to attend with other members of the school community. Learn more about parent events such as Celebration and Blue Jay Bazaar and activities like the Mothers’ Rosary Group and the Boutique House at jesuitnola.org/get-involved.

Dress Code/Uniforms

Students are required to wear complete uniforms on all school days while on campus. (See the Bulletin for full dress code details.)

Uniforms and/or shoes may be purchased from many stores in the area. While Jesuit does not endorse any particular outlet, the following stores are listed for your convenience:

Uniform Patches

The official Jesuit Blue Jay patch should be sewn on the left sleeve with the top of the patch ¼ inch below the shoulder seam. Uniform patches are sold for $1.50 and may be purchased at the switchboard located by the blue awning on Banks Street throughout the school year, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Call (504) 483-3800 for details.

To the Student

The dress code for Book Days is as follows:

  1. Grooming/Dress Code: All students must have a proper haircut and they must be clean-shaven. (See the Bulletin for full dress code details.)
  2. Underclassmen must bring a dress shirt, coat, and tie for the pictures.
  3. Seniors must wear a shirt with a collar.

Please be certain to wear your complete uniform for New Student Orientation, Thursday, August 17; the first full day of school, Friday, August 18; and, of course, every regular school day thereafter. Your shoes must be shined. You must be clean-shaven. Your hair should be properly cut. Your name tag should be in place above the pocket on the right side of your shirt. Find more dress code details in the Bulletin.

New Parents’ Orientation Meeting – The parents of new students should attend an orientation meeting in the auditorium followed by a Mini-Schedule for 8th and 9th grade parents at 7 p.m.
Mini-Schedules for Parents – Jesuit holds two Mini-Schedules for parents to meet their sons’ teachers and to learn first-hand at the beginning of the year each teacher’s class policies and expectations. Please note the different start times for these two Mini-Schedules.

Town Hall Meeting, Mandatory for Parents of New Students – Parents of new students are required to attend Jesuit’s Town Hall Meeting in the auditorium to hear about and discuss the tough decisions their sons will face during their high school years.
