The “pings” of Jesuit’s bats on Easter Monday were as loud as the sound of crickets on a spring evening at John Ryan Stadium.

In defeating St. Augustine, 17-7, the Blue Jays exploded with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. But the Purple Knights came right back in the second inning with four runs. It looked like it would be a close game as the 5-4 score held up, even in the bottom of the fourth when Jesuit added a run to make it 6-4.

But in the bottom of the fifth inning, nothing but “pings” for the Jays, seven of whom crossed home plate to take a commanding 13-4 lead.

And it still wasn’t over. The Purple Knights scored three unearned runs in the top of the sixth on fielding errors to cut the score to 13-7.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Jays decided to turn out the lights… for good. Four runs crossed the plate, giving the Jays a 17-7 win in six innings on the 10-run rule. Jesuit had 13 hits to St. Aug’s six.

Glynn Hyer came on in relief and pitched 4 2/3 innings to nail down his third win of the season.
