World Youth Day
World Youth Day (WYD) is a worldwide encounter with the Pope which is typically celebrated every three years in a different country. The most recent WYD was celebrated in Rio De Janeiro in the summer of 2013. The next WYD will be held in Krakow, Poland from July 26 – August 4, 2016. Jesuit High School has a tradition of attending World Youth Day events, first in Toronto in 2002, in Cologne in 2005, in Madrid in 2011, and in Rio de Janeiro in 2013.
The dates for the entire pilgrimage are July 26 – Aug 4, 2016. The group will begin its pilgrimage in Warsaw and quickly make its way to Krakow for WYD events such as the Papal Welcoming Ceremony, WYD Catechesis, Stations of the Cross, Pilgrim Walk, Papal Prayer Vigil, and closing Mass. These events provide an occasion for spiritual formation and renewal as well as interaction with committed Catholic youth from around the world.
The pilgrimage continues after the official WYD events with visits to Wawal Cathedral, Auschwitz, the Shrine of Our Lady of Chestahowa, and Wadowice. This time is formatted similar to a retreat with daily Mass, opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, evening reflections, and talks on faith and the spiritual life. The spiritual focus of the pilgrimage will be the life of St. John Paul II whose compelling witness to the Catholic faith in the 20th century helped the Church form its rich understanding of the nature of the human person.
The pilgrimage will be organized through the office of Campus Ministry and the Chaplain’s Office. All questions or concerns should be addressed to the Chaplain, Fr. Kevin Dyer (firstname.lastname@example.org, (504) 483-3890 Ext. 3890). There will be a 6:1 faculty to student ratio to provide for adequate supervision of the student while on pilgrimage. We currently have 17 seats reserved on a Delta airlines flight in and out of Warsaw, Poland (approximately 4.5 hours north of Krakow).
For the pilgrimage, the accommodations will vary between retreat houses, school classrooms, hostels, parish halls and host families. A sleeping bag will be necessary, and students should be comfortable sleeping on the floor, if necessary.
Pricing and registration information will be available at the student meeting on Tuesday, January 12, during the first half of lunch in the Holy Name Chapel.
