Blue Jays Sail in 2008 National Tournament

On May 24-25 the Jesuit sailing team--consisting of seniors Michael Levert, Julian Richards; juniors James Pottharst, Danny Housey, Austin Slakey, Kenneth Taylor; and sophomores Ian deBoisblanc and Stanton Murray-- traveled to Minnetonka, Minnesota,  for the high school team racing national championship for the Toby Baker Trophy.

The team sailed against the twelve best teams from around the country on the recently thawed lake. The team struggled on Saturday in breezes ranging from 16-27 knots. In several races, they took the lead, but the Jays were unable to hold off the more experienced teams and qualified for the Bronze Division. On Sunday, they faced more manageable conditions; but in the end,
they finished in a tie for 10th.  St. George's  High School from Rhode Island won the championship.

Congratulations to the Jesuit sailors for placing 10th in the Nation!

Jesuit Sailing Team Earns 4th at Nationals

On May 8th and 9th 2004, the Jesuit sailing team competed in the Mallory Cup National High School Fleet Racing Championship Regatta in New Orleans, LA, earning fourth place out of twenty teams from across the nation.

With months of preparation, the Jesuit sailing team sought to improve upon 2003's 6th place overall finish in the same national event. The sailing team, one of Jesuit's most consistently successful organizations in both national and local competition, qualified for a national championship berth by winning the Southeast regional regatta earlier this spring.

The event itself was held on Lake Ponchartrain in New Orleans and sailed in the two-man 420 class sailboat, which allowed Jesuit's sailors to compete with the comfort and tactical knowledge that comes with sailing on one's home waters. Coached by Jesuit graduate Daniel Meade (`96), Skipper Edward Conrad and crew Lawrence LeBon took 4th place in the A-fleet while skipper Baker Potts and crew Paul Cordes earned 6th place in the B-fleet, giving Jesuit a 4th place overall finish in the highly competitive field of twenty teams representing the top sailors from each region of the country.

The racing was held in light to medium breeze, with several short, highly competitive races testing the sailors' upwind and downwind sailing abilities. The Jesuit team benefited from its local knowledge, but struggled downwind on several occasions due to the team's inability to locally prepare for large-fleet high school competition.

At the regatta's end, defending champion Point Loma High from San Diego reclaimed 1st place while Jesuit improved over last year's finish by reasserting itself as a national contender.

The Jesuit sailing team had also qualified for the Baker Cup National Team Racing Championship in the spring, but was unable to attend due to the regatta's conflict with the senior team members' graduation ceremony.
