This final game of the season was for the state championship, the first of the Louisiana High School Lacrosse League, which combined the Deep South Lacrosse League (composed of the lacrosse teams along I-10 from Lafayette through to Ocean Springs) with the four teams in Shreveport, which had been playing in the Texas League. Jesuit's Varsity Lacrosse ends their season 10-2.

Jesuit-Loyola 2009 State Championship Game Photo Gallery Jesuit Defeats #2 Seeded Byrd in State Semi-Final Game!Last weekend, May 2nd, Jesuit Varsity Lacrosse travelled to Shreveport for the State Semi-Final and State Championship Games. On Saturday, Varsity defeated C.E. Byrd of Shreveport, the team favored by all the sports analysis and national rankings to win the semi-final game in the competition towards State Championship. Jesuit surprised all the "experts" when they came back out of a 0-4 deficit after the first quarter to be one point behind at half time, and to surge past the Jackets in the third and never looked back. In the fourth quarter, the team extended it's lead to four goals and shut down their offense the rest of the game. Coach Mike Brantley commented that Byrd is a large, very aggressive and physical lacrosse team. "They fight hard and they wanted to play in that final game. We did also, and our smaller determined team, fought hard and won. We respect them and look forward to playing them again. I believe they just assumed they would win after the game in April. I think they forgot it was tied until we had that non-releasable penalty. We look forward to playing them again next year." Sophomore Mac Bulloch, launches for a shot from the crease, but the Byrd defender's blow thwarts his aim. |

Blue Jay Varsity Lax Stuns Catholic with Five Points in Under Two Minutes! Goalie, Stephen Baay, come out of the goal and instantly ends the scoring dream of Catholic attack!

This past Sunday, April 5th, the Jays continued their travel weekend, driving from Shreveport to Baton Rouge and took on Catholic High School on Sunday afternoon. It was expected that the Bears would be hunting for a win, but the districts #1 Jays expected to handle the challenge. At half time the score was 3-3, and the exhausted Jays, after a very hard fought game in Shreveport refocused to take control of the game. The Catholic High Bears surprised the Jays and in the 4th quarter with only two minutes left in regulation play, the Jays were down 8-4. Coaches Brantley, Joines and Gray expected this would be an upset; how could you recover four goals in less than two minutes! Then it happened! With a time out called, the coaches began to rally the team, and focus how they'd make their stand! Within one minute, the score was 9-8. The Bears finally scored back and the score was 9-9 with less than a minute left. Then with half a minute on the board, Louis LaCour added his 4th goal of the game, making it 10-9. The Jays held possession of the ball, thanks to PJ Mills winning the face-off and the midfield getting it safely in the offensive half of the field. The Jays remain #1 in district, and rating show the team ranked #3 in state. Provided the Jays beat Rummel next week (18th), a new team this year, the Jays will secure the district title and march into the state play off's beginning with the quarter finals on the 25th and the semi-finals and championships in Shreveport on May 2nd & 3rd. Also, that same afternoon, JV2 fell to Catholic's JV2 by a score of 3-2. JV1 won their game by 1 goal.

Jays Stung by Three Minute Unreleasable Personal Foul, Fall to C.E. Byrd in Shreveport
Jesuit in the scrum to keep the ball on "attack" !

Jesuit's Lacrosse Teams played in Shreveport this past weekend, April 4th. Varsity played Byrd in a thrilling game that threatened to hand Byrd an upset they did not expect, but Jesuit was aiming for! In the 4th quarter with less than five minutes left, the score was 7-7. A surprising foul laid against Jesuit's #33, Junior, Connor Roberts stopped Jesuit's aspirations cold. Head Coach Mike Brantley was stunned, having never seen such a call in twenty-seven years of lax. Assist Coach Vann Joines, was furious, stating that such a severe call is laid only for the most flagrant intentional abuses and unsportsmanlike conduct. In the three minutes, with Defense Section Leader, Jenior, Roy Lambert injured, Jesuit fell to four goals. In the remaining two minutes of play, once the team was full strength again, the Jays attempted two shots, but Byrd held on for the win. The Jay's response: "See you in the final play off games." Junior Iggie Perrin denies Byrd the ball, as Junior, Paul Smith responds.
