In record style, Jesuit senior Hobie Hotard won the boys’ singles title at the LHSAA state tournament in Monroe on Friday evening, May 3. Hotard won the singles championship as a freshman, sophomore,
junior, and senior. He earned his championship trophy but the
LHSAA will be shipping it to him after coming up one trophy
short at the tournament. Meantime, Hotard received a medal.

Senior Hobie Hotard has become the first Louisiana high school boy to win four consecutive singles’ titles in the LHSAA Division I state tennis tournament. Seniors Trevor Lew and James Sampognaro, the defending state doubles champions, fell short to Mandeville in finals on the morning of Saturday, May 4. Also playing in the tournament were freshman Jonathan Niehaus (who reached semifinals) in singles and junior Kevin Mickan with sophomore Gregory Suhor (semifinals) and juniors Jordan Lacoste with Andrew Tufts (quarterfinals) in doubles. All matches were played on the campus of the University of Louisiana-Monroe. Rain has delayed play each day of the tournament. Because of the persistent rain, tournament officials decided to tweak the rules. Players used what is called “no ad scoring,” in which games are limited to a total of seven points. Congratulations to James Sampognaro for being one of six metro area seniors who earned Academic All-State recognition in tennis from the LHSAA.

LHSAA State Tennis Tournament Underway In Monroe With Revised Scoring Rules Wednesday Rain Forces Postponement of Round One

First-round matches of the LHSAA state tennis tournament, postponed because of persistent rain on Wednesday, began at 8 a.m. on Thursday, May 2. Percipitation was still a problem on Thursday. Weather permitting, final matches will be played on Friday, May 3. All matches are being played on the campus of the University of Louisiana-Monroe. Three of Jesuit’s varsity seniors are defending state champions — Hobie Hotard in singles, and Trevor Lew and James Sampognaro in doubles. Blue Jays Take Top Four Spots in Regional Play to Advance to LHSAA State Tennis Tournament

Jesuit’s varsity tennis team won top honors in the LHSAA Regional Tennis Tournament at UNO on Tuesday, April 23. All eight Blue Jays who played in regionals will head north to Monroe to play in the state tournament May 1-2. In the second and final day of competition at the regional event, Blue Jays plowed through Brother Martin in the semi-final round to reach the final round, where it was all blue and white. In the semi-finals round Jesuit faced Brother Martin on three courts and finished with wins: freshman Jonathan Niehaus (6-4, 7-5) and Hobie Hotard (6-0, 6-0) in singles and seniors Trevor Lew and James Sampognaro (6-3, 6-4) in doubles. In the fourth court it was Jesuit versus Jesuit, as junior Kevin Mickan and sophomore Gregory Suhor topped teammates juniors Jordan Lacoste and Andrew Tufts (6-1, 6-2). The final round was an all-Blue Jay event featuring Hobie Hotard besting Jonathan Niehaus (6-2, 6-1) and Trevor Lew and James Sampognaro topping Kevin Mickan and Gregory Suhor. All eyes will remain fixed on Hotard to see if he can pull off what no young man has done in the history of prep tennis in Louisiana — win an unprecedented four consecutive individual championships. Destrehan (6-0, 6-0). The duo also defeated H.L. Bourgeois (6-0, 6-1)
and New Iberia (6-3, 6-3).

Tennis defeated Holy Cross, 6-1, in a non-district match on Tuesday, April 8 at UNO. Singles match winners were junior Kevin Mickan (8-3), sophomore Alex DePascual (8-0), and sophomore Gregory Suhor (8-5). Freshman Jonathan Niehaus was bested in his singles match (8-2). Winners of doubles matches were Suhor/Mickan (8-0), seniors Trevor Lew / James Sampognaro (8-1), and juniors Andrew Tufts / Jordan Lacoste (8-0). The Blue Jays (3-0) will next play their final district game against Rummel on Tuesday, April 16. The team is preparing for the regional tournament which will be played April 22-23 at UNO. won in singles, 8-0.
The tennis team defeated Brother Martin, 5-2, on Thursday, April 4 at UNO to win the team’s third district game of the season. Senior Hobie Hotard (8-0) and sophomore Alex DePascual (8-1) won singles matches. Freshmen Jacob Niehaus (8-4) and Jonathan Niehaus (8-4) both lost hard-fought matches. Doubles winners were Trevor Lew / James Sampognaro (8-0), junior Kevin Mickan / sophomore Gregory Suhor (8-1), and juniors Andrew Tufts / Jordan Lacoste (8-2). The Blue Jays (3-0) will next play Holy Cross in a non-district game on April 9 before their final district game against Rummel. The team is preparing for the regional tournament which begins on April 22. |
Tennis Jays Compete in National Invitational Tournament, Then Return to Shutout Country Day in a Non-District Match 
Against Country Day on March 26, junior Jordan Lacoste won in singles, as well as
a doubles match with fellow junior Andrew Tufts.
The Jesuit tennis team shutout Country Day, 7-0, in a non-district match played on Tuesday, March 26. Singles match winners were juniors Kevin Mickan, Jordan Lacoste, and Andrew Tufts, and sophomore Gregory Suhor. Winners of doubles matches were Suhor/Mickan, Lacoste/Tufts, and sophomores Alex DePascual/Patrick Torsch. The next court appearance for the Blue Jays will be a district match against Brother Martin on Thursday, April 4. Last week (March 21-24), Jesuit’s tennis team enjoyed the honor of playing in a highly competitive national invitational tournament — the DecoTurf High School Championships in Louisville, KY. The Jays finished 1-3 against nationally ranked players as well as state championship (and state runner-up) teams from Gulliver Prep (FL), Ocean Springs (MS), Winter Park (FL), and Trinity (KY). |

Varsity Tennis Opens Season with Strong Wins Over Rummel (4-0) and Brother Martin (7-0) Seniors Kevin Mickan (left) and Hobie Hotard playing against Brother Martin Varsity Tennis decidedly defeated Bro. Martin, 7-0, on Tuesday, March 5 to win the team’s second district game of the season. Seniors Hobie Hotard, Trevor Lew, James Sampognaro and Kevin Mickan all won their singles matches. Doubles winners were Lew / Sampognaro, Mickan / sophomore Gregory Suhor, and junior Andrew Tufts / junior Jordan Lacoste. The Blue Jays opened the season with a solid district win over Rummel, 4-0, on February 21. The team will play Newman in a competitive, non-district contest on Thursday, March 7 before heading to a tournament in Kentucky on March 21-24. |
