Blue Jays Reclaim State Crown at LHSAA Meet in Sulphur

The Jesuit swimming team won the 2012 Division 1 State Championship on Saturday
(November 17) in Sulphur by a mere 20 points, defeating the runners-up Bears of Catholic High (Baton Rouge) who were last year’s champs. The first place
finish marks the 37th state championship for swimming at Jesuit
High School. Congratulations to Coach Bret Hanemann ’85
and all the Blue Jay swimmers and their parents.

For 30th Consecutive Season, Blue Jays Bring Home a Metro Swimming Championship Trophy 


Junior Brett Dipuma dives into the 200 medley relay which ended in a photo finish with Jesuit in second place. The Blue Jays scored 468 points, more than twice as many as the second place team, at the Metro Swimming Championship
Meet held at UNO.
 

The undefeated varsity Swimming Team took home first place in the Metro Meet on Saturday, November 3, marking this the 30th consecutive championship win for the Blue Jays. The Jays now turn their attention to competing in the State Tournament in Sulphur the weekend of November 16-17.

Blue Jay Team Takes 1st Place District Swim Meet

The undefeated varsity Swimming Team took home first place in the District 5A meet on Wednesday, October 24 in Chalmette beating teams from Brother Martin, Archbishop Rummel, and Chalmette. The team now looks forward to competing in Metro Championship meets with preliminaries on November 2 and finals on November 3.

Undefeated Swimming Team Prepares for District Meet

The undefeated varsity Swimming Team will compete in the District 5A meet on Wednesday, October 24 in Chalmette. Blue Jay swimmers defeated teams from Mandeville and Northsore on Thursday, October 11 at Franco’s in Mandeville and then swam in the Breast Cancer Awareness Invitational on Saturday, October 20.

Blue Jays Cross the Lake and Return with Top Scores 


Freshman Patrick Finegan and sophomore Chris Simmons swim the 200 IM with the Varsity Swimming Team on Thursday, October 11 at Franco’s in Mandeville. Blue Jays defeated teams from Mandeville and Northshore as they prepare for the upcoming District 5A Meet on Wednesday, October 24 in Chalmette.

Blue Jays Make a Splash in Tri-Meet at UNO


Sophomore Sam Johnson finished second in the 100-yard breast stroke at a tri-meet held September 27 at the UNO Lakefront Aquatic Center. The Blue Jay
swimmers defeated teams from Mandeville, Holy Cross, and Brother
Martin. Bret Hanemann ’85, who is the head coach of Jesuit’s swim
team, says the Jays are focused on qualifying for the state meet
that takes place November 16-17 in Sulphur, LA. The team 
will compete Wednesday, October 3 in an invitational
event at Chalmette.

Since Hurricane Isaac interfered with the regular schedule, the league has used tri-meets and quad-meets in which schools compete against several opponents too make up for cancellations and lost time. The team practices daily from 5:15-7 a.m. at the UNO swimming facility.

Blue Jay Swimmers Get Their Feet Wet at Metro Dual

Wednesday, September 19. The meet signifies the official start of the
swimming season in which the Blue Jays are looking forward to
reclaiming the state championship. Last year, the Jays finished
in second place at the state meet.

Jesuit Swim Team Kicks Past the Competition to Claim Metro Championship


Junior Matt Arseneaux makes his turn halfway through a 100-yard breaststroke
heat in the Metro Championship Meet on Saturday (November 5) at the UNO Aquatic Center. The Blue Jays scored 336 points to place first among the
boys’ teams. The teams from Fontainebleau and Mandeville High
Schools placed second and third, respectively, with 312 and 239
points. The Blue Jays will be focusing on preparing for the 
annual State S
wimming Meet in Sulphur the weekend of
November 18-19. Jesuit will be defending its state title
won last year by a scant one point.

A Swimmingly Celebratory First-Ever Reunion for Blue Jay Alumni Who, as Students, Were Like Ducks in Water

Jesuit alumni who were on the school’s swimming teams gathered for a reunion outside of the UNO aquatic center this past Saturday (October 29, 2011). This inaugural reunion of alumni swimmers was a freestyle affair and allowed Blue Jays to backstroke and re-connect with one another. The event, which attracted 17 alumni swimmers (including one Blue Jay from the Class of ’56), also provided the opportunity to mingle with members and parents of the 2011 Jesuit swimming team. This first reunion of Jesuit swimmers was organized by  current assistant swimming team coach Tré Roux ’87, Bret Hanemann ’85 (who serves as Jesuit’s current head coach of swimming), alumni representative Manelik Pou ’93, and Joni McClure-Diaz, who is the mother of senior swimmer Grant McClure.

Swim Alumni Invited to Celebrate Swim Homecoming
Saturday, Oct. 29 at UNO

Former Blue Jay swimmers and their families are invited to a Jesuit swim team homecoming scheduled for Saturday, October 29 at UNO.

First, swim team alumni and their families and current swim team families will meet at 10 a.m. just outside the entrance to the UNO pool for a tailgate party featuring complimentary food and soft drinks and plenty of Blue Jay Spirit. From 10 a.m. to noon swim team alumni will have the opportunity to mingle and chat with members of the 2011 varsity team.

 

Next, at 12:30 p.m., all Blue Jay fans are encouraged to witness and cheer on the swimming Jays as they participate in the Central District Meet. 

 

Each former Blue Jay swimmer will receive a t-shirt announcing him as a Jesuit swim team alumnus, a gift of this year’s swimming program.

Jays Swim to a Win in the District 9-5A Meet

Swimming and Winning by a Landslide
 


Jesuit hosted and won the first New Orleans Metro Breast Cancer Invitational at the UNO Aquatic Center Saturday, Oct. 15. Twenty teams from across South Louisiana participated. Many, including sophomore Brett Dipuma pictured above swimming in the 100 Butterfly, wore pink swim caps in support of the cause. The Blue Jays, who are coached by Bret Hanemann ’85, remain undefeated in district competition. Jesuit swimmers get back in the water Thursday, Oct. 20 in Chalmette.

Junior Johnston Burkhardt, shown swimming in the 200-yard freestyle event, was part of the Jesuit varsity swim team following the recent Fountainbleau, Lakeshore, and Cabrini Meet at the Pelican Athletic Club. The Blue Jays’ next swim meet is Thursday (September 29) at UNO and will feature teams from Rummel, Northshore, and Vandebilt.

Splish, Splash! Blue Jay Swimmers Back in the Pool!
 


Jesuit opened the 2011 swimming season with a win over Mandeville at Franco’s Athletic Club Wednesday (September 14) night. Thirty-one swimmers, 14 of them seniors, hit the water six days a week, sometimes as early as 5:15 a.m. to prepare for competition. Jesuit swimmers are directed by Bret Hanemann ’85, who is in his 17th year as head coach. Dual meets continue through the end of October. The Blue Jays will participate in a relay meet this Saturday at UNO, signifying the unofficial beginning of the 2011 swimming season. Jesuit will defend its 2010 state championship at the state meet in November.
