The 2012-13 Quiz Bowl season is off to an amazing start. Jesuit sent two varsity teams and one JV team to Chapelle’s First Annual Fall Quiz Bowl Tournament on September 29 competing with 22 teams from around Southeast LA. The team of seniors, consisting of Peyton Fine (captain), Andrew Burmaster, Will Emmett, and Dominic Lloyd, and the team of juniors, composed of Kevin Yokum (captain), Mark Alvarez, Ian Calamari, Jack Caliva, Andrew Collins, Stanley Dai, and Reuben Hogan, ended the tournament with an equal 9-1 record so they played against each other in the finals. The game was tied at the last question which the senior team answered correctly. That team averaged an amazing 425 points per game. Bowlers Engage in Friendly Competition in 2012 National Quiz Bowl Tournament
Usual Teammates Pitted Against Each Other How does the coach of the winning team lose, and the losing team’s coach win? It happened in the National Quiz Bowl tournament held at the beginning of summer. In the preliminary games one team had a better win/loss record (5-1 v 4-2) but the other team had scored more points (1650 v 1470). Both teams had played well up to this point. Now they would come together to see who would get a chance to advance toward the finals. This is a tournament scenario which many teams have faced. The difference this time was that both teams represented the same school —Jesuit. There had been enough qualified players for Jesuit to enter 2 JV teams in the tournament, and unfortunate seeding results had pitted friends and usual teammates against each other under the same coach, Mr. Ron Rossi. The score was close in the beginning, and then one team slowly pulled ahead. But who won or lost isn’t important to this article. What is important is the atmosphere in the room which led the room’s moderator to comment that this was the most enjoyable game he had ever presided over. What is important is that the behavior of the team members before, during and after the game illustrated the meaning of “friendly competition.” Though each side wanted to win, it was apparent that the competitors would not allow the results of one game to affect the more important ties they had developed as teammates and Jesuit students. Meanwhile the varsity team of Andrew Burmaster, Andrew Collins and Kevin Yokum, under the very capable leadership of senior Matt Young who earlier in the year had led the team to a state championship, ended their last tournament of the year with a 6-1 record. The junior high team, coached by Mr. Joe Knight and composed of captain Patrick Fine, Andrew Cerise, Alex Daigle and Stephen Owers, also ended their season at the National Tournament with an exceptional 5-2 record. With so many experienced players returning, expectations are high for the 2012-13 year as Jesuit shoots for its fifth straight overall state title. |

Jesuit’s Junior Varsity team, consisting of three freshman and one pre-freshman, got off to a slow start in the preliminary round with close losses against older teams from Episcopal School of Acadiana, Newman, and St. Joseph's Academy of Baton Rouge, but a commanding victory against Catholic of Pointe Coupee was sufficient to advance the team into the double elimination playoff round.
Next, they were seeded fourth and defeated the first seed team from St. Joseph. They next lost to Newman, but once again defeated St. Joseph in the loser's bracket. This win placed them in the championship match against Newman, but because Newman was undefeated in the playoff round Jesuit would have to defeat Newman twice for the championship. Two victories in a row against the Newman team secured the championship for the Blue Jays.

National Tournament of Academic Excellence before exiting the competition. Congratulations to sophomore Daniel Cooper for being named to the six member National All-Star team. In addition to receiving an honor medallion, Daniel also earned a $1,000 scholarship. Jesuit’s Varsity Quiz Bowl team-- Kanwal Matharu ’09, captain, James Burvant ’11, Nick Chedid ’09, Daniel Cooper ’11, Jonathan Coote ’09, and Taylor Hillburn ’09-- traveled to Disneyworld on Saturday, June 13 , to represent the state of Louisiana at the competition. The three day tournament pitted the best teams that participating states had to offer. Some states even sent all-star panels. Jesuit defeated the teams from Ohio and Pennsylvania before being sent to the losers’ bracket by South Carolina. Jesuit fought back and defeated Indiana, New Jersey, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Kentucky to make it into the semifinals. There, the Jays faced the teams of Colorado, Iowa, and Oklahoma, who proved too quick for the Jays in a game that eliminated the team from competition. Ironically, Jesuit had earlier beaten the eventual tournament champion - Kentucky. At the closing banquet, when the six-member National All-Star team was announced, a panel of judges named a Blue Jay to that elite team. Sophomore Daniel Cooper, who had joined the Jesuit’s quiz bowl team late in November as team manager and who had quickly risen to indispensible player, won that honor along with a medallion and a $1000 scholarship.
This tournament was a terrific way to end the season of the best quiz bowl team in the history of Jesuit. Mr. Ron Rossi, Jesuit’s varsity coach, sadly bids farewell to his seniors and their parents who have given so much of their time to the success of the program over the past years. Anyone wishing to see the team in action may view their victories in the finals of the State Championship games on Saturday, August 29 at 9:30 AM, WLAE-TV.

Warming Up for the Big Show: Quiz Bowlers Display Their Competitive Edge at the NAC Blue Jays Take Second Place in Preliminary Tournament Before Jetting to DisneyWorld in June for the National Event
Congratulations to the Jesuit quiz bowl team for their second place finish at the National Academic Championships held this year in New Orleans. Pictured above are Coach Ron Rossi, Nicholas Chedid, Taylor Hillburn, Kanwal Matharu (captain), Daniel Cooper, and James Burvant.

National Academic Championship Tournament (NAC) is a privately sponsored event open to teams who have demonstrated their winning ability in other tournaments. Jesuit’s winning a first place in Louisiana and in three different tournaments this year resulted in an invitation to attend NAC. The NAC group hosts their tournament at three different locations in May/June. New Orleans was the first location where 34 teams from throughout the United States attended . Washington D.C. and Chicago were the other two locations, each averaging 34 teams. The winners from each city play off to determine a national champion for the organization. The New Orleans divisional tournament lasted three days-- May 23- 25. On the first two days, all participating teams play six games with the top sixteen teams advancing to single elimination format on the third day. Jesuit’s six game record was 5 wins and 1 lost. Jesuit defeated East JV, Elizabethtown, Bishop Garrigan (scoring the most points of any team in the tournament in this game - 490), Alvin High, and East Varsity B. Jesuit dropped a game to East Varsity A team, 295 -220. The 5 -1 record placed Jesuit as the fourth for the third day's single elimination competition.
On the third day, Jesuit first defeated Charleston Catholic (340-115) before playing East Varsity A again. This time, the Blue Jays won the match by a score of 285 - 250. Jesuit next played the #1 seed, James Island from Virginia. In a very close game, sophomore Daniel Cooper tied the game on the last question, thereby throwing the match into a sudden death overtime. Daniel responded quickly and correctly to the first question which secured the win for the Blue Jays. The final game for the championship of the New Orleans divisional tournament and the right to attend the overall playoffs pitted the Blue Jays against Horace Greeley High from Pennsylvania. The latter won the match 335-235, giving Jesuit second place, a finish that surpasses any other Jesuit team in 14 years of participating in this tournament.
The next stop for the quiz bowlers is another national tournament in Disneyworld. This tournament, held June 13-16, is limited to one team per state with Jesuit representing the State of Louisiana. |
