| The Blue Jay Newspaper Earns Honors from Silver Scribe Competition The Blue Jay Wins Honorable Mention 
Several students recently received awards for their work on Jesuit’s student newspaper, The Blue Jay. From left are: senior Zach Lannes, junior Jack Caliva, senior Nick Rosato, senior Peyton Fine, and senior Jonathan Llovet.
The boys from The Blue Jay did a fantastic job on Saturday, February 23 at the annual Tom Bell Silver Scribe Competition, sponsored by the New Orleans Press Club and Loyola University’s School of Mass Communications.
Among previously published submissions, senior Peyton Fine won first place for best sports story for his coverage of the American Legion World Series championship. Peyton also won third place in the features category for his profile of Mr. Edgar "Dooky" Chase, III of the Class of 1967, Jesuit’s 2012 Alumnus of the Year. Junior Jack Caliva won third place in the news category for his coverage of Jesuit’s participation in the annual Pro-Life March in Washington, D.C. Senior Jonathan Llovet won the first place prize for editorial/opinion writing for his moving piece on the impact of bullying. In the live competitions, senior Zach Lannes won first place in editorial writing and third place in photography. Jack Caliva scored third place in the critical review category. Senior Nick Rosato won second place in critical review and third place in news writing. In strong competition against schools with major journalism programs, The Blue Jay received an overall honorable mention rating. The annual Silver Scribe competition is sponsored by Loyola University and the Press Club of New Orleans. In addition to the competition, the students were able to work with local professionals from print, television, and Internet media sites, to gain insight and advice about their work. |

The boys from The Blue Jay did a fantastic job on Saturday at the annual Tom Bell Silver Scribe Competition, sponsored by the New Orleans Press Club and Loyola University’s School of Mass Communications.
In tight competition with area high school newspapers, The Blue Jay was named Best Newspaper, tying with the Lusher Post-Dilivian. Of particular note was that the Jays beat
The Irish Eyes, Grace King’s powerhouse perennially winning paper.
Nine of our students competed in the individual writing competitions, scoring well in each one. Here were the results in each category:
Editorial Writing: Jesuit swept the entire category! Ricky Bordelon, First;
Nicholas Caluda, Second; and Jack Caliva, Third.
News Writing: Matthew Martin, Third place; Ricky Bordelon, honorable mention.
Feature Writing: Ricky Bordelon, Second place; Nicholas Caluda, Third.
Sports Writing: Peyton Fine, Second place.
Column Writing: Nicholas Caluda, First place; Peyton Fine, Second; John Lindsey,
honorable mention.
Layout and Design: Matthew Martin, Second place.
Critical Review: Alex Nay, First place.
With so many wins, Jesuit was named winner of the Silver Scribe Sweepstakes Award, as well. |
The Blue Jay Writers Earn Silver Scribe Awards Staff writers and editors of The Blue Jay competed last weekend at the 34th annual Tom Bell Silver Scribe Competition. The Blue Jay journalists joined more than 50 students from six area schools for the yearly high school journalism competition, which is sponsored by Loyola University and the Press Club of New Orleans. Senior Evan Shea, editor-in-chief, won the first place prize in the Sports Writing category, for a piece that the judges called "heartfelt and compelling" and which showed "fresh ideas." Shea also won the second place award in Column Writing and an honorable mention in both the Feature Writing and Critical Review categories.

Senior Ian de Boisblanc took first place in Editorial Writing. The judges particularly cited his "original point of view." In the Feature Writing category, senior Eric Haydel took second place. Haydel also scored an honorable mention for Layout and Design. Senior Chris Glueck won the second-place photography award. Junior Ricky Bordelon won the third-place prize in the Critical Review category. Other Blue Jay staff writers competing included seniors Fritz Metzinger and Tyler Treuting. The Blue Jay earned a second place rating overall in the Best Newspaper competition. The panel of judges made up of professional journalists praised The Blue Jay's mix of features and news, cited the professional, easy-to-read design of the pages and solid writing skills of its staff. The Blue Jay Newspaper Earns Honors from Silver Scribe Competition 
The Blue Jay newspaper won the distinction of best high school newspaper
at the 32nd annual Tom Bell Silver Scribe Journalism Competition
at Loyola University Saturday. Senior John Walsh, Blue Jay Chief Editor,
also garnered the Silver Scribe Award at the competition. John is pictured
above with Dominic Massa ’94, who was the last Silver Scribe winner
from Jesuit. Massa is an executive producer at WWL-TV and
a member of Jesuit’s Alumni Steering Committee.
