Jesuit High School Club Sports 2012 - 13 Varsity Lacrosse Team |
Blue Jay Lacrosse fields four teams — varsity, junior varsity (JV), “frosh” (grades 9 and 10), and “U15” (8th grade). The four teams have a total of 15 coaches, including four assigned to the varsity squad. Lacrosse is almost a year-round club sport at Jesuit with fall and winter/spring schedules. The fall schedule starts in October and runs through Thanksgiving (varsity may go longer), and the winter/spring season is January through April. In summer, a lacrosse club travels to play other teams. Jesuit also offers well-supervised lacrosse summer camps. Players may also participate in conditioning and indoor fun lacrosse throughout the summer. New players are assigned team big brothers (in addition to Jesuit’s regular big brother program). The new players may participate in summer camps. indoor conditioning, and “wall ball,” helping them become connected even before their formal Jesuit school experience begins. As the league has grown, Blue Jays have led the sport beyond the high school level by helping to develop lacrosse programs for inner city youths, including girls. |

Lacrosse Wins Championship in Battle by the Beach Invitational for Second Consecutive Year Members of the lacrosse team are all smiles after winning the Battle by the Beach tournament in Gulfport, MS.
For the second consecutive year, Jesuit’s varsity lacrosse team took home first place medals from the Battle by the Beach Lacrosse Invitational in Gulfport, Mississippi. The tournament concluded on Sunday, March 24 with a thrilling 9-8 overtime victory against rival Brother Martin. In Saturday’s preliminary play, the Blue Jays easily defeated Catholic of Baton Rouge, Dutchtown, and John Carroll (Birmingham, AL).
Coach Mike Brantley’s squad qualified for the championship game by defeating rival St. Paul’s, 7-3, on Sunday morning. The Jays beat St Paul’s for their first state title in April 2012. But in January 2013, the Jays dropped a season opener against the Wolves in pre-district play, losing a four-goal lead at halftime. In February at the Allstate Collegiate Sugar Bowl Classic, Jesuit faced St Paul’s in a showcase game. Jesuit lost in overtime following a disputed call on a shot on goal by the Jays. Hence, when Sunday morning arrived and Jesuit and St. Paul’s were facing each other for a third time this season, an exciting match was anticipated. St. Paul’s proved to be a worthy opponent, but the Jays prevailed, winning the match, 7-3. In the championship game of the tournament, the Jays played another rival, Brother Martin, who tied the game, 8-8, in the final 30 seconds to force the match into overtime. Junior Arman Alizadeh dodged under his defender and around the goalie to place a neat corner shot into the far side of the goal, giving the Jays a 9-8 victory and the tournament championship. View Photos of the Battle at the Beach Tournament Progress by Jesuit’s Other Lacrosse TeamsVarsity is graduating 18 seniors this year and the program is growing future champions for Jesuit in the JV team. At the Battle at the Beach Tournament, the JV team won its championship as well. Having beaten their three opponents Saturday, the JV team faced off against St Paul’s at the same time as varsity faced St. Paul’s on a parallel field. JV players proved themselves a maturing squad, beating St. Paul’s 10-0. They went on to beat Catholic of Baton Rouge for the title, joining varsity in the awards presentations. JV is coached by Mr. Greg Anderson and assisted by Mr. Chad Caldwell. JV-B and U15 squads also performed well, winning their brackets on Sunday, but falling short of making it to the championship rounds. |

Lacrosse Suffers Loss to St. Paul’s (4-5) in Hard-Fought Match In the last game of the Collegiate All State Sugar Bowl Lacrosse Classic, Jesuit and St. Paul’s were showcased as a rematch of the May 2012 state championship game, which saw Jesuit capture the state title. In this hard fought match, Jesuit scored first to then be matched by St Paul’s. St. Paul’s put up one more point to make it 2-1, but Jesuit answered to tie it up, 2-2. This was repeated with Jesuit and St. Paul’s at 3-3. In the fourth quarter, Jesuit jumped up to 4-3, only be answered by St. Paul’s scoring a matching goal late in the game, which sent the two power house teams into overtime - a sudden death situation. Late in the overtime quarter (a shorter 4 minute round), St. Paul’s achieved a fast break resulting in a score, thus winning the game. |
