Because of the importance and complexity of the college admissions process, all students have access to college placement information. College counselors meet individually with juniors and seniors to discuss the college admission process, including the importance of curriculum choice as well as academic performance, the need for extracurricular involvement, standardized testing preparation and avenues for pursuing scholarships and financial aid. In addition, college admission representatives visit Jesuit High School each fall to meet with interested high school juniors and seniors. Jesuit students are encouraged to attend these meetings to learn more about specific colleges and universities they may be considering. Workshops and information sessions for parents and students begin in the fall of Junior Year with College Night, an event where the college counselors outline the college application and selection process. Topics covered in this session include: beginning the college search process, the importance of GPA and standardized testing, how to research colleges and a financial aid overview. In the spring of Junior Year, the college counselors host a Question and Answer session for students and their parents. The class is divided into two groups by alphabet so that all attendees have the ability to participate. Please come with any questions or concerns that have arisen since attending our fall College Night. A second College Night is held in the fall of Senior Year, where the college counselors provide detailed information about the application process. More emphasis is placed on deadlines for application, scholarship and financial aid, and a complete overview of the TOPS scholarship program is included. Additionally, the Guidance Department coordinates an annual College Fair, an evening when representatives of approximately 125 colleges around the country visit Jesuit. Sophomores, juniors, seniors, and their parents have the opportunity to meet with college admissions and financial aid representatives at this event. In the college counseling office, we view a student’s college search and application process as one of the first of many adult decisions he will make. While we welcome phone calls and emails from parents during all stages of the process, we expect that all of the work concerning his applications (completing the application, requesting transcripts, phoning/emailing admission offices for status checks, etc.) will be completed by the student.
