Jays, Panthers Win Metro Meet

It's a first for Northshore; Jesuit wins 25th straight

Sunday, November 09, 2008

By Tammy Nunez

It was a day of continuing tradition for one swimming powerhouse and establishing one for the another.

Jesuit won its 25th consecutive Metro Championship title on Saturday at Tulane with 429 points.

The Northshore girls won their first metro championship, and they did it in commanding style with 350 points. Mount Carmel finished second with 225 points and Vandebilt was third with 192.

Panthers swimmers Colleen Donovan and Heather Winn dominated both their individual events to help Northshore. Donovan won the 200 individual medley (2:10.97) and the 100 freestyle (53.32). Winn took the 200 freestyle (1:55.76) and the 500 freestyle (5:11.31). The duo shared the Swimmer of the Meet honor. Adding to Northshore Coach Ed Kelly's delight was that the Panthers won all three relays. Kelly had coached 25 years without winning a metro meet.

"I'm happy for the kids," Kelly said. "It's the kids that make the coach."

It was a whole bunch of Blue Jays that kept Jesuit's tradition going, as it won two of the three relays, though it didn't have one swimmer win more than one individual event. Brian Carr and Marc Dorsey were the only Blue Jays to win individual events. Carr won the 200 freestyle (1:47.20), but couldn't overtake Northshore's Adam Pennington in the 500 freestyle, settling for second (4:46.51).

Teammate Marc Dorsey took the 100 backstroke in 53.96 and finished second in the 200 individual medley (1:58.97). Jesuit's Mark Reuther finished second in both the 50 freestyle (21.80) and the 100 butterfly (50.33).

The Boys Swimmer of the Meet was Mandeville's Philip Gallego, who came within two-tenths of a second off an All-American consideration cut in the 50-yard freestyle, winning in 21.69. He crushed the 100 freestyle field, taking that event in 47.76.

His 50 time was a lifetime best, but Gallego knows his competition will be looking for another shot at him when the stakes are higher.

"It's going to be those same guys at the state meet," Gallego said and later added: "It feels good to win (Swimmer of the Meet) tonight."

Fontainebleau's Jessica Kopcso also won two events -- the 100 butterfly (59.30) and the 100 breaststroke (1:09.53).

Jesuit and Northshore hope to duplicate their feats in Sulphur in two weeks.

"I just hope we can pull this off at the state meet," Kelly said. "We're on right track, we've checked off all our goals so far."
