Sunday, November 22, 2009 By Lori Lyons Staff writer
SULPHUR -- Jesuit and Lutcher continued their dominance of the state's swimming Saturday, as both the Blue Jays and the Bulldogs successfully defended their state championships. But one had an easier time than the other. Jesuit's Division I title really never was in doubt as the Blue Jays won their 35th state championship and their fourth consecutive. Jesuit won seven of 11 events to accumulate 264 points, well ahead of Catholic, which finished as runner-up for the fourth consecutive year. Blue Jays senior Brian Carr continued his own string of titles, winning the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle. He also swam on the Blue Jays' 200-yard medley relay. Ramsay Burch won the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. And when it was over, Carr was itching to jump in the pool with his teammates and coach. "When you've been swimming for a long time, you get kind of used to it," Carr said of his team's string of titles. "But every year you have fun and it's exciting. There's pressure on everybody who is trying to win a championship." But to win its fifth state championship in a row -- its first in Division II, Lutcher had to outswim Vandebilt -- literally. Heading into the final event, the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Bulldogs held a four-point lead over Vandebilt. Then the team of Jayce Whitlow, Mark Pousson, Blake Roussel and Hunter Louque edged the Terriers by seven one-hundredths of a second to take the title. "Whoever won that race was going to win state," Lutcher Coach Lanny Remondet said. Remondet said there is at least one race like this every year -- one that comes down to the wire. Louque knew it too. "I was so nervous," he said. "I can't say enough about the boys," Remondet said. "Moving up in classification was difficult, but we stepped up to the challenge. I told them all week that they had to earn their respect in Division II. And it looks like they might have done it." Lutcher trailed Vandebilt until the 50-yard freestyle, in which Roussel finished second and Whitlow took third. After 16 events the Bulldogs were ahead by almost 60 points. But heading into the final race, Lutcher led 324.5 to 320.5 Louque, sporting a Mohawk and clutching the team's trophy, said he was worried about the Bulldogs' fate, especially after finishing second to Vandebilt in Friday's preliminaries. "Yesterday, it was almost the exact same times," he said. "Every year there's a race like that. It comes down to hundredths of a second. I knew I had to do it. It's my senior year." Louque also helped his team by winning the 100-yard freestyle and finishing second in the 200-yard freestyle. The Lutcher relay team of Jayce Whitlow, Mason Duhe, Blake Roussel and Louque also won the 200-yard freestyle relay. The 200-yard medley relay team finished third. Roussel finished second in the 50-yard freestyle and Whitlow was third. East Jefferson's Dylon Rykosky won the Division II 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.39 and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:55.55. Colin Babcock of St. Paul's won the Division I 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:521.95, qualifying him for All-American. His time of 57.80 in the 100-yard breaststroke also qualified him for All-American. Walter Loop of Mandeville was second in the event. His time of 58.00 qualified him for All-American. Northshore's Michael Faust was third with a time of 59.05, qualifying him for All-American consideration. |

All went as expected Saturday at the UNO Aquatic Center, as Jesuit and Northshore's girls showed why they are the top swimming programs in the area. The Blue Jays won two of three relay races and had swimmers finish in the top three in four of eight individual events on the way to their 26th consecutive Metro Championship. Jesuit had 410 points, Northshore was second with 267 points, and Fontainebleau finished third with 220 points. Jesuit Coach Bret Hanneman said overall his team swam well. "Even though you might look strong on paper, you don't take that as a guarantee," Hanneman said. "You've got to go swim it." Brian Carr led the Blue Jays with first place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1 minute, 43.02 seconds, a Metro meet record) and 500 freestyle (4:41.04). Jesuit's Ramsey Burch finished first in the 50 free (22.33). Senior Colin Babcock of St. Paul's finished first in the 200 individual medley (1:56.42) and the 100 breaststroke (59.18) and was selected Boys Swimmer of the Meet. Babcock's breaststroke time qualifies for All-American consideration. "I was having some neck spasms this morning, so I was kind of worried, and I had some breathing troubles coming off of yesterday," he said. "But I felt good when I got here, so I expected to win some races." In girls' events, Northshore swimmers finished in the top three in five individual races and won two relays for their second consecutive championship. Northshore had 401 points, Fontainebleau finished second with 245, and Mandeville was third with 228 points. "I consider this just as tough as state, but the girls were ready," Northshore Coach Ed Kelly said. Northshore had three swimmers place first in an event. Mary Jabbia won the 200 individual medley, Colleen Donovan won the 100 freestyle (53.96), and Heather Winn won the 500 freestyle (5:03.96). Fontainebleau freshman Kara Kopsco earned Girls Swimmer of the Meet honors for first-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:52.65) and 100 backstroke (1:02.01). Both times qualify for All-America consideration. Fontainebleau's Jessica Kopsco finished first in the 100 butterfly (1:00.03) and 100 breaststroke (1:08.39). |

Thursday, October 01, 2009 By Peter Steinbauer Contributing writer
How does a swimming program that has lost one state championship since 1988 approach the start of a new season? Is it possible to take winning for granted? Jesuit coach Bret Hanemann explains to Blue Jay swimmers that it's a different team that wins every year, so it's a new accomplishment. Each group then tries to outdo other Jesuit teams, as the 2008 team did in setting a state record in the 200-yard freestyle relay. It's a matter of sustaining tradition. You don't take any of these lightly," Hanemann said. "It's a humble team." The Blue Jays are aiming for their fourth consecutive state title this fall. They won 18 in a row before losing in 2005. The senior squad has unique goals it can achieve. Captain Marc Dorsey is looking for his fourth individual state title in the 100 backstroke, while captain Brian Carr is in position for his fourth state title in the 500 freestyle. Dorsey, who is considering swimming at Notre Dame, Georgia Tech and Texas, also has two individual titles in the 200 individual medley. Carr has two titles in the 200 free. Senior captain Ramsay Burch placed second last season in the 50 free. Hanemann said Jesuit has been fortunate to have someone win four individual state titles in the same event every so often. But he admits Dorsey and Carr are "a special breed." Jesuit will face off against Northshore in its second meet of the season today at 4 p.m. at Cross Gates Athletic Club in Slidell. Dominican will get its most difficult test of the season today at Cross Gates against Northshore, the defending Division I state champion, which has many of its swimmers back from last season. Dominican is looking to improve on a 10th-place finish in state last season. Hanemann, who coaches Dominican, said the team is shooting for the top seven this year. Dominican is led by senior captains Emily France and Jenn Vegh, and junior captain Allie Willem. |
