Retif Wins State Legion Title

Jesuit-based Team Rallies Three Times to Edge Peake

Thursday, August 07, 2008

By Pierce W. Huff

GONZALEZ -- Retif Oil Coach Tim Parenton calls Nico Caluda "our best matchup off the bench."

Caluda, Retif's main pinch-hitter, proved Parenton's words to be true Wednesday.

Caluda drove in the winning run with a two-out single to center field in the top of seventh inning to lead the Jesuit-based team to a 6-5 victory against Brother Martin-based Peake BMW in the Department of Louisiana American Legion baseball championship at Johnny Ambeau Park.

Retif (21-5) advances to the American Legion Mid-South Regional in Enid, Okla., beginning Aug. 14.

Trailing 5-4 in the top of the seventh, Retif tied the score at 5 when designated hitter Ryan Holstein grounded out with one out to drive in Mason Katz.

Then, Parenton called for Caluda, a left-handed hitter, to face Peake right-hander Kevin Berry. Caluda singled to drive in the winning run on a 3-2 pitch.

"It was a fastball that he left up," Caluda said. "I wasn't thinking. I was up there reacting."

Retif left-hander Jordan Rittiner (8-0), who committed to LSU, pitched a complete game, allowed nine hits and had seven strikeouts. Rittiner finished the game with three consecutive scoreless innings.

Retif would have needed to be beaten twice to not win the championship, as it was undefeated and Peake (27-10) had one loss entering Wednesday's game.

Peake had leads of 2-0, 4-2 and 5-4.

"All of the games we've played against them have been good, and they haven't been blowouts," Parenton said.

Peake scored two runs on two hits and one walk in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Berry drove in a run when he tripled down the right-field line. Kyle Maldonado followed with an RBI single to center that scored Berry.

But Retif tied the score at 2 with two runs on three hits and one error in the top of the second.

Peake scored two runs on four hits in the third to take a 4-2 lead. Berry drove in his second run with a one-out single to right that scored Mason Montney. Maldonado drove in his second run with a single to left field.

But Retif tied the score at 4 when center fielder Chad Guidry hit a two-out, two-run homer off the scoreboard in left on a 2-0 pitch.

Peake led 5-4 on right fielder Sean McMullen's sacrifice fly in the fourth with one out.

"Coach let me and catcher Mason Katz call our own pitches the first few innings, and I was making pitches and they were just hitting them," Rittiner said. "Coach Parenton took over the pitch-calling after the fourth inning."

Peake entered the title game when it rallied from a 7-0 fourth-inning deficit to defeat Rummel-based Nationwide Restoration 8-7 on Tuesday.

Retif Will Play for Title

Shreveport disqualified after being defeated

Wednesday, August 06, 2008

By Lori Lyons

GONZALES -- It wasn't a meaningless victory -- just one the Retif American Legion team didn't need after all.

Shortly after the Jesuit-based team rallied for a 12-10 win over Shreveport on Tuesday afternoon, the White Sox were disqualified and sent home from the state tournament for using ineligible players. A protest lodged by one of the New Orleans-based schools was upheld after a nearly two-hour meeting between Shreveport Coach Bobby Gilliam and Louisiana Department Chairman A.J. Jones.

Jones said the Shreveport team, which combined two teams from last season, failed to secure the proper release forms.

"It was super, hyper, technical paperwork," Gilliam said. "I'm upset. It's sad for the kids. I think we still had a chance to win this thing, being 2-1."

Retif Coach Tim Parenton said he was glad that his team rallied for the win on the field but disappointed for the Shreveport players. He also wished his team wouldn't have had to spend all day Tuesday on the field. The game, which began at 1 p.m., included a 90-minute rain delay. It ended shortly after 5 p.m. because of a 2 1/2-hour time limit, with eight innings completed. The White Sox did not get their final at-bat.

"You don't like to win things on a technicality," Parenton said. "The one thing that's a shame is, games were played that shouldn't have been played. If things were known before the tournament, it should have been turned in then. "

With the win, Retif got the rest of the night off. Brother Martin-based Peake BMW and Rummel-based Nationwide Restoration played in the Tuesday nightcap, which eliminated one team. Retif will play the winner today at 4 p.m. A victory would give it the state championship; a loss will force a second game.

The action off the field nullified what had been an impressive comeback for Retif.

Stephen Lukinovich's two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning gave Retif an 11-10 lead. Lukinovich then scored after back-to-back wild pitches.

Retif appeared ready for a rout at the start, scoring five runs in the first. The team batted around with four hits and also was aided by four wild pitches. Derek Dunham and Ethan Oddo had run-scoring doubles in the inning.

Solo home runs by Mason Katz in the second inning and Dunham in the third put Retif ahead 7-0.

But the White Sox came back in the fourth inning to score nine runs on six hits, five of which went for extra bases. Morgan Brian, who led off, hit two doubles in the inning. Austin Whitten and Alex Garcia hit two-run homers. Shreveport also got help from four walks.

Austin Hedges tripled, and Jarid Scarfiotti's RBI grounder put the White Sox ahead 11-7 in the sixth inning.

Retif started its rally in the seventh after a 90-minute rain delay. Chad Guidry was hit by a pitch, then Katz doubled and scored on a single by Joshua Faciane to cut the lead to 10-9.

They finished it in the eighth when Cory Guidry singled, Chad Guidry walked and Lukinovich doubled to score them both.

American Legion State Tournament: Ninth-Inning Heroics Secure 8-7 Retif Oil Win

With third baseman Josh Faciane (10) looking on, pitcher/ infielder
Stephen Lukinovich is all smiles as he crosses the plate to score the
game winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Stephen reached
home when Nico Caluda stroked a sacrifice fly that scored
Stephen, who tagged at third. Retif, now 2-0 in tournament play,
defeated Gauthier & Amedee, 8-7, on Monday afternoon
to continue their march through the winner’s bracket.

Game Summary: Brady Hadden (2-0) earned the win, however,
Stephen Lukinovoch pitched 8 and 2/3 innings with twelve strikeouts.
Offensively, outfielder Chad Guidry led Retif going five for five,
followed by his brother Cory, who batted two for four,
including a solo homerun. Catcher Mason Katz went
two for five; pitcher Stephen Lukinovich batted
two for three and left fielder Joe Palmer finished two for five.

Retif Oil Scores Late to Win

Peake BMW stays alive with afternoon win

Tuesday, August 05, 2008

By Lori Lyons

GONZALES -- Retif Oil overcame Gauthier and Amedee on Monday afternoon to guarantee itself a spot in today's play at the American Legion State Tournament at Johnny Ambeau Park.

Retif (19-5) will play the Shreveport White Sox (27-5) today at 1 p.m. in a winners' bracket game. The outcome of that game will determine the remainder of today's schedule. Rummel-based Nationwide Restoration played Gauthier and Amedee in Monday's late game. Brother Martin-based Peake BMW lost to the Shreveport White Sox 12-2 in the morning, then defeated the Shreveport A's 12-1 in the afternoon.

Retif took a 5-4 lead into the ninth inning but had to rally in the bottom to escape with an 8-7 victory over the Gonzales combination of East Ascension, Dutchtown and St. Amant

Retif pitchers allowed four runs off of seven hits and struck out 11 in eight innings. Cory Guidry hit a double and a home run, and Chad Guidry had four hits for Retif.

With one out in the top of the ninth, Cameron Babin singled up the middle for Gauthier and Amedee. With two outs, Dean Elwood hit a ball just to the left of first base. Retif second baseman Cory Guidry made the scoop but slipped in the wet grass. That set up UNO-signee Donnie White, who homered over the left-field wall, giving his team a 7-5 lead.

"He's a good hitter," Lukinovich said. "So I knew we had to go at him, but you've got to be cautious. I just left it over the middle."

In the bottom of the inning, Cory Guidry led off with a walk before a brief rain delay.

When play resumed, Chad Guidry singled to shortstop Justin Boudreaux, who slipped when attempting to throw to second. The wild throw advanced Chad Guidry to third. Mason Katz's grounder to third scored Chad Guidry and cut the lead to 7-6. Lukinovich walked, then Ryan Holstein doubled down the right-field line to score Chad Guidry and tie the score at 7. Nico Caluda then hit a fly ball to center field that was deep enough for Lukinovich to score.

Lukinovich said the key to the rally was simple.

"Making the pitcher work and getting timely hits," he said.

Retif Oil Wins State Tourney Opener

Rittiner's Pitching Lifts Jesuit-based Team Past Shreveport A's

Sunday, August 03, 2008

By John Giambelluca

GONZALES -- Jordan Rittiner pitched seven innings and allowed three hits to lead Jesuit-based Retif Oil to a 9-2 victory against the Captain Shreve-based Shreveport A's in the opening game of the American Legion Baseball State Tournament at Johnny Ambeau Park.

Retif (18-6) scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-1 lead.

Cory Guidry singled to lead off the inning. After Chad Guidry walked, Shreveport pitcher Casey Elkins (5-2) struck out Mason Katz. Stephen Lukinovich then doubled to drive in both runners, and Ryan Holstein followed with an RBI single.

Retif extended its lead in the sixth inning when Cory Guidry doubled and scored on a single by Chad Guidry with two outs.

"We took a week off, and I thought we were sluggish early in the game," Retif Coach Tim Parenton said. "Our bats came alive in the middle innings, and I hope they stay alive."

Retif put the game out of reach by scoring three runs in the seventh inning to take a 9-1 lead.

Evan Schiavi's two-run single highlighted the inning. Ethan Oddo had a RBI double in the inning.

Rittiner (6-0) did not allow an earned run, and he struck out seven Shreveport hitters.

"I had control of my fastball and change-up," Rittiner said. "I did not have my best curveball. I was able to force their hitters into keeping the ball on the ground."

Lukinovich and Cory Guidry led Retif with three hits each. Holstein and Schiavi had two hits apiece.

Shreveport (21-16-1) scored an unearned run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. But Retif responded with two runs in the bottom of the second -- an RBI single by Schiavi and a run-scoring double by Cory Guidry -- to take a 2-1 lead.

Retif Wins Southeast Louisiana Tournament Championship

Friday, July 25, 2008

By John Giambelluca

Jesuit-based Retif Oil won the American Legion Southeast Louisiana Regional Baseball Tournament with a 6-2 victory against Brother Martin-based Peake BMW on Wednesday night at Maestri Field.

Retif and Peake advance to the state tournament in Gonzales, starting Aug. 1.

Retif (17-6) led 6-2 in the ninth inning. However, Retif's Beau Mothe retired Peake's leadoff hitter then walked the bases loaded. Stephen Lukinovich relieved Mothe and bailed Retif out of the jam.

Both teams had numerous scoring opportunities, but neither got a key hit. Retif stranded 15 baserunners and Peake 14.

"Its not like we did not hit the ball," Retif Coach Tim Parenton said. "We hit the ball hard, but Peake made the plays."

The game was tied at 2 after two innings. Retif scored a run in the third and fourth innings to take a 4-2 lead. Lukinovich's single drove in Chad Guidry with Retif's third run, and Cory Guidry plated the fourth run with a sacrifice fly.

Retif extended its lead to 5-2 with a run in the seventh when Evan Schiavi tripled with two out and scored on Cory Guidry's single. Retif's final run came in the ninth on a RBI single by Chad Guidry.

Peake (23-8) stranded eight baserunners in the first three innings. It also had the bases loaded in the sixth but did not score. Retif starting pitcher Alex Roeling (3-0) pitched five innings, allowing four hits before being relieved by Mothe.

Mothe did not allow a hit in his 3 1/3 innings.

"We played a few night games in the tournament, but we would have preferred a mix," Parenton said. "We had pitchers on a pitch count. Some had to pitch more than we're used to."

and earned the right to face Peake BMW for the
