Jesuit continued its streak of state championships in Swimming by taking its 16th straight crown Saturday, November 23, 2002 at the University of New Orleans Aquatic Center. The Jays finished with 403 points; Catholic of Baton Rouge, 329 points; and Archbishop Rummel, 262 points.

Jesuit’s swimming Blue Jays dominated the New Orleans Metro Championship meet on Saturday, November 9, 2002, finishing with 451 points--160 points ahead of Archbishop Rummel, the runner-up. Alton Smith’03 led the Jays to victory: he broke two Metro records and was named "Swimmer of the Meet."

Smith finished first in the 50-free with a time of 21.17, setting a new Metro record and achieving an All-American Qualifying time. He then came back to smash a 26-year-old record in the 100-free, taking it home in 46.66, an All-American Consideration time. The previous mark, set by Howard Nelson in 1976, was 47.51.

The State Championship meet will begin on Thursday, November 21; the finals will be on Saturday, November 23. The State Championships will be at UNO this year.

Coach Bio:
Bret Hanemann’85 returns as head coach of the Blue Jay Swim team after a three year hiatus. Hanemann served as head coach of the Jays from 1992 to 1998 bringing home seven state, regional, and district championships during his tenure.

Hanemann received his bachelor of arts degree in communication from Spring Hill College in 1990. After graduation from Spring Hill he held positions with WWL and CBS Sports. From 1990 to 2001 he was an instructor of speech and head of the audio visual department at Jesuit. Since 2001 he has been dean of students at Jefferson Community School in Jefferson Parish.

In addition to his coaching duties at Jesuit, he has served as head swim coach for Dominican High School bringing home three state championships and head coach at the Southern Yacht Club.

He is married to the former Alissa Nusloch and is the father of three children, Abigail, 7, Sam, 2, and Ian, 6 months.
