Jays Take State Champions



Soccer - 2003 State Champions
Jesuit's Soccer team did it again. For the second consecutive season, the Blue Jays are Louisiana's 5A State Champions. Saturday night in the midst of a dense fog at Tad Gormley Stadium, the Blue and White won its fifteenth consecutive game and captured its second consecutive State Championship trophy. Lee Thomas'03 scored a goal in the first half, and Edward Cullen'04 scored a goal in the second half to push the Jays past Lafayette, which scored one goal late in the game. Jonathan Weber'03 was named defensive player of the game by head coach Hubie Collins. Casey Steen'03 received the Most Outstanding Player award.

Jesuit Finishes District Unbeaten (2-8-03)
Ian Batherson'04 and Nick Spitale'03 scored goals to lead the Jays to a 2-1 victory over Rummel Saturday afternoon at Tad Gormley. Sweeper Raleigh Wolfe'04 was named defensive player of the game. The Blue Jays completed district competition with a 10-0 record.


Jesuit Smothers Shaw (2-5-03)
Jesuit's 9-0 victory over the Shaw Eagles Wednesday afternoon at Tad Gormley was due in large part to the Jays' solid defense and six goals scored by Ian Batherson'04. Wayne Pierce'05 scored two goals, and Casey Steen'03 scored once. Center mid Jeff Briscoe'04 was named defensive player of the game. The District Champion Blue Jays now have a 21-1-4 overall record and a 9-0 record in district competition.


Jesuit Clinches District (2-1-03)
Nick Spitale'03 scored two goals against Holy Cross Saturday afternoon at Tad Gormley as the Jays defeated the Tigers 2-0. Stopper Matt Bowman'04 was named defensive player of the game. The Blue Jays, with an 8-0 record, clinched the district championship.


Jesuit Sweeps Crusaders (1-29-03)
Eddie Cullen'04 scored two second-half goals against Brother Martin Wednesday night at Tad Gormley as the Jays defeated the Crusaders 2-0. Casey O'Flynn'03 and Lee Thomas'03 assisted on the goals. Marking back Paul Perez'03 was named defensive player of the game. The Blue Jays, with a 7-0 record, remain undefeated in district.

Jesuit Clips Cavaliers (1-25-03)
Paul Delahoussaye'04 scored the lone goal of the game as the Jays were forced into a shoot-out against De La Salle Saturday afternoon at Tad Gormley. Eddie Cullen'04, Brandon Sanchez'03, and Thad Fury'04 each scored a goal in the first five man shoot-out. In the sudden-death shoot-out Kyle Schmidt'04 and Jeffrey Philastre'03 scored to lead the Jays to the victory. Goalie George Rowley'03, who stopped two Cavalier attempts in the shoot-out, was named defensive player of the game. The Blue Jays remain undefeated in district with a 6-0 record.

Jesuit Charges Past Raiders (1-22-03)
Lee Thomas'03, B.J. Nielsen'04,and Casey Steen'03 each scored a goal in the first half to stake the Jays to a 3-0 lead and Eddie Cullen'04 scored twice in the second half in a 5-1 victory over the Rummel Raiders on Wednesday afternoon at Rummel. Marking back Jonathan Weber'03 was named defensive player of the game. The Blue Jays finished the first round of district play with a 5-0 record.

Jesuit Shuts Down Shaw (1-18-03)
Brandon Sanchez'03 scored twice, and Wayne Pierce'05, Edward Cullen'04, Thad Fury'04, and Kyle Schmidt'04 each scored a goal in a 6-0 shut-out victory over the Shaw Eagles on Saturday afternoon at Shaw. Raleigh Wolfe'04 was named defensive player of the game. The Blue Jays remain undefeated in district competition.

Jesuit Trips Tigers (1-15-03)
Brandon Sanchez'03, Lee Thomas'03, and Edward Cullen'04 each scored a goal in a 3-1 victory over the Holy Cross Tigers Wednesday evening at Tad Gormley Stadium. Jesuit stopper Matt Bowman'04 was named defensive player of the game. The Blue Jays are now 3-0 in district competition.

Jesuit Outshoots Crusaders (1-11-03)
Brandon Sanchez'03, Raleigh Wolfe'04, Edward Cullen'04, and Casey Steen'03 each scored a goal in a 5-kick shoot-out after overtime to beat the competitive Brother Martin Crusaders Saturday afternoon at Tad Gormley Stadium in a rematch of the 2002 State Championship. Jesuit goalkeeper George Rowley'04 blocked two of the Crusaders' kicks in the decisive shoot-out. The Jays, trailing at halftime 2-1, rallied in the second half to even the score at 3-3 by the end of regulation. Ian Batherson'04 scored early in the second half, and Lee Thomas'03 scored the Jays' third goal with 2:20 left on the clock. Cullen scored Jesuit's only goal in the first half. The Blue Jays are now 2-0 in district competition.

Jays Open District Competition With Win (1-8-03)
Lee Thomas'03 scored all three goals in Jesuit's victory over the DeLaSalle Cavaliers Wednesday afternoon at Tad Gormley. The Jays' next district matchup is Saturday, January 11, against Brother Martin. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
